As my district’s instructional technology resource person, I work with teachers and students in grades K-12 developing technology-infused activities and lessons. Some of the time I work behind the scenes, planning with teachers, researching, and developing technology-infused activities which teachers can incorporate into their classroom instruction. Other times I am in the classrooms and computer labs working directly with students modeling technology-infused lessons and strategies.
Over the years I have found that using digital media as an alternate assessment or activity inspires students to be more creative and to put forth more effort. Students are far more excited about demonstrating their knowledge by creating a comic strip or a movie than they are taking a traditional multiple choice, fill in the blank test. Research supports my observations, too. And now our state department of education is decreasing the number of state required standards tests and instead requiring schools to use performance-based assessments to measure and document student learning.
I’ve also found that students who struggle with the traditional academic model of classroom instruction, homework and then a test, are far more successful when given alternate assessments using digital media. I’ve worked with students, who were failing every core content subject, who out-performed their peers when given a chance to produce work using digital media.
Some of the activities I use with students include creating:
• a visual narrative by merging images,
• comics and graphic novels,
• video political campaign ads,
• video games,
• virtual field trips
• websites,
• blogging,
• movies,
• digital presentations,
• and digital art,
Whenever possible, I encourage teachers to let students choose which type of media or technique they will use to complete a project or assignment.
I am always researching new technology and instructional strategies, taking classes, and experimenting with new ways to use technology-based activities to inspire students and motivate them to learn. I know that having students use digital media to produce work that demonstrates their knowledge and understanding accomplishes this as well as helping them to develop skills and abilities that will help them once they leave the classroom.

Please note that student faces are blurred to protect privacy.

Had a wonderful time at #Brainstorm2015  on Friday. Google classroom, gamification, so much more. Absolutely loved the video game creation using Pixel Press. Can't wait to try it with students.

VSTE 2014 is almost here. Hope you join me for my presentation on Tuesday morning - Visual Narratives. We're going to spend some time learning AND making visual narratives (stories with no or minimal text) and learning how to use them both for instructional presentations and to motivate student creativity and writing. - Sue
