I came to this place for the second time today. I ordered food for take out and paid for it. After about 10 minutes a waiter comes up and tells me I have to wait outside with everyone else. I told him I already paid and he said I still had to wait outside. It is almost 100 degrees out and I was not in anyones way. My initial waitress said nothing about waiting outside, and i don't see why I have to wait outside in the blazing heat for food I paid for while a dining room full of people who haven't paid sit in air conditioning. Terrible business practices, I will never return to this place. The food at ToadStyle is way better.

Surprised that the reviews all kinda sound the same, but that the wait staff/service hasn't improved over the months.... I checked out Champs and similar to some of the other comments on here, I was rather underwhelmed by the wait staff/service. I met a friend there who got there before me, so she was seated at the bar when I arrived. The bartender asked if we wanted to stay at bar or get a table, and we decided to get a table instead. Big mistake. We were forgotten for like 10mins. The place wasn't busy so we kept looking around trying to get some service, until my friend finally flagged the bartender down and he came and took our orders (odd). Food came out pretty fast, and that's when the restaurant got kinda busy....but no one came to check on us (not a HUGE deal). Then a server asked to clear my plate when there was still obviously food on the plate (awk), thennnn we had to wait another 10mins after we were ready to pay until we were able to flag server down for check. Then the check and payment sat for a long time, until we finally flagged bartender down (he was only one that made eye-contact, *shrug*) to pay to which he responded with something along the lines of "Sure, i'll give this to your server ok?" in a tone that felt like a this-isnt-my-job-just-so-you-know jab. And like, cool story bro...but you DO work there, so what else do ya suggest?! So anyway, service was wack and my Baja Fish Wrap was cool..but the inefficiency and vibe makes me kinda not wanna go back.

Awesome, all-vegan 50s-style diner with amazing and varied, yet affordable food, generous portions. Can't wait to come again!

I love eating at Champs! It's so comforting to have an all vegan diner where you can order breakfast at any time of the day. You must try their pancakes!!! They're fluffy, soft, warm and filling. Have them with some tofu scramble, veggie bacon, a little butter and syrup, and a cappuccino on a nice Sunday morning and you will not regret!!

Wifey and I come all the way from Jersey..Essex County at least 3 times a month...wish they would franchise this place and bring a location to the ever so changing food scenery of downtown Newark or Montclair..voted one of Jersey's best downtown food scenes

We never got to eat. in fact we were ignored by the rude man who seated us (was upset because we sat sign saying to wait to be was our first time there). made eye contact several times, just kept seating other parties and did not send a waitress over. Finally when a waitress began welcoming other parties and taking orders from people that came in after us, I could not take it anymore, and when "Mr. Happy" came by our table again, I hollered, " are we going to get a waitress today?" The closest waitress, came up and apologized..said she just got there and was trying to get a grip on who was there. She had been there all along, and if that was the issue, should MR HAPPY had told her what party was next? A real bad experience. I don't want to say its because we were black, but certainly, that's how our family felt. we walked out and went to SAGE around the corner and had an awesome THAI dinner with an excellent staff, catering to our every need. Now that's service.
