West Fjords, Iceland

The West Fjords in Iceland are the least populated and most remote part of this sparsely populated remote island. The West Fjords population in 2007 was 7,380 (and I know most of them… only joking ;-)

As the name indicates there are many fjords, surrounded by steep mountains. There are many attractions, including the great cliffs of Látrabjarg that comprise the longest bird cliff in the northern Atlantic Ocean. There you are guaranteed to find huge colonies of the cute and wise looking puffins.

You are spoiled for choice for great hiking routes though the most famous hiking route in the West Fjords has to be Hornstrandir.

We are maybe not totally unbiased but we can recommend the West Fjords for anyone that likes the great outdoors, adventures, photography and little bit (lot) of peace and quiet.
