Windows 10 On ARM Benchmarks Are Bad And They Should Feel Bad

Windows 10 on ARM is Microsoft's second big go at getting Windows running on the lightweight ARM processors, best known for their dominance in smartphones and tablets, and increasingly present on lightweight, long battery, and Always On LTE PC's.

Their previous attempt, Windows RT, suffered from an 'app gap' problem, due to lack of support for x86 or x64 apps. Windows 10 on ARM was supposed to be different, thanks to x86 emulation, letting it run classic Windows apps. In theory.

Warning signs were already showing when Microsoft published the limitations of the platform for developers (later withdrawn but essentially recapitulated as developer notes elsewhere). It was a long list, affecting all x64 apps, many games (due to Direct X limitations and anti cheat incompatibility), any number of things depending on legacy resources, and most or all x86 peripherals, among other things it wouldn't play nice with.

But, again in theory, it runs some legacy apps. That is what makes the latest benchmark tests so disappointing. They show x86 emulation lagging badly, when it works at all, leaving the user with little usable beyond UWP, i.e. the same apps Windows RT used. Otherwise its only advantage over RT is the growth of Progressive Web Apps (PWA's), but these still have some ways to go and don't always shine well against native counterparts, nor do they show the best advantage of using ARM.

Google's Chrome OS is taking the other road, adding Android apps, which are best optimized for ARM but can work well on good Intel processors as well. However, not many Android apps are desktop optimized (yet). Chrome OS also omits most or all of the 'legacy compatibility' baggage of Windows, which is good or bad depending on your perspective.

The race is on, but if the bar of entry is minimal performance and compatibility, Windows 10 on ARM isn't doing well, even compared with Windows 10 on some Intel processors offering comparable battery life and Always On LTE connectivity, let alone against their more processor agnostic Chrome OS/Android rival.

"Shared iPad" feature for Schools looks wonderful. Apple should consider bringing the long overdue "Guest account" login or multi user login to #iPadPro in next major release. #Tech #Apple #whynot
