Hey Google... you do actually do usability studies on UI stuff right? The new maps interface is pretty, but has a few major usability issues...

I've been using it for a while there are a few issues around it. Mainly that I don't know how to do things I used to. But you get used to it and the carded format fairly quickly

I keep telling people that early computers and computer programmers were mostly women, and people never believe me. SO THIS.
Tim O'Reilly originally shared:

I just got an email from +Suw Charman about Ada Lovelace Day, and thought I'd share it here, since it's a cause I believe in. Suw wrote:

I'm in the process of raising awareness of this year's Ada Lovelace Day, which is 7 October 11, and as I know many of you have pretty big networks I'd be most grateful if you could help spread the word.

Ada Lovelace Day - http://findingada.com - is an international day of celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths which was founded in 2009. This year, we've teamed up with BCSWomen to put on two really awesome events in London:

Ada Lovelace Day Android Extravaganza

This one-day Android development workshop will introduce AppInventor and the basics of mobile development. It’ll be fun and interactive – no programming experience necessary. Bring your own laptop and an Android phone if you have one. Tea and coffee will be provided, but not lunch so either bring a packed lunch or be prepared to pop out for a sandwich.

Date: Friday 7 October 2011, 10am – 5pm
Venue: BCS, 1st Floor, The Davidson Building, 5 Southampton Street, London,
WC2E 7HA
Cost: £5 plus VAT
Tickets: http://bit.ly/ALD-android

Ada Lovelace Day Live!
Join Helen Arney, Maggie Philbin, Gia Milinovich, Dr Sue Black, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, and a host of women from science and tech for an entertaining evening of geekery, comedy and song on Ada Lovelace Day. Drinks and nibbles
provided.

Date: Friday 7 October 2011, 6pm – 10pm
Venue: BCS, 1st Floor, The Davidson Building, 5 Southampton Street, London,
WC2E 7HA
Cost: £12 plus VAT
Tickets: http://bit.ly/ALD-live

We also have other independently organised events in Farmville (VA), Bletchley Park (UK) and online - details on the site at http://findingada.com . Finally, we're @findingada on Twitter and if you want to just retweet stuff, there's plenty of tweets there to choose from!

Thanks for any help you can give us!

Best

For anyone who is at UCI this summer: you're running out of time to sign up for the class I'll be teaching on Computer Games (current syllabus is linked). It'll be a really fun class learning about how people play games, why they play, and what gamers can do to improve the world.

It's going to be a great class, and you don't want to miss it. Or if anyone you know might be interested, please spread the word! I believe I still need a few more students in the next week or two for the class not to get cancelled.

Nothing makes you feel smart quite like successfully performing tasks on the command line :)

For any googlers/google-users out there: is there a way to synchronously present Google Doc presentations? So if people log in to view the presentation, they will see slides advanced when I advance them? Or is there an alternative service that would let me do it?

(I'm still trying out the "social search" that Google wants me to use ;p)

I am pretty sure google presentations should let you do that but I am on the move so cannot double check right now

I'm going to try social searching here: does anyone know of a website where I can put in a list of things (names, strings) and then it will pick a random one and animate it being drawn from a virtual hat? I feel like this needs to exist, but I don't have time to code it up ;p

Something like this is as close to that as I'm aware of. http://www.random.org/lists/

No animations of items being drawn out of a hat however. For that, there is an app, but it's obviously for 'doze and who wants to install an app to select a random item? http://the-hat.findmysoft.com/
