Just like painters need paint, we're big believers that marketers need great software and tools behind them to be successful. We've been scoping out some of our favorite content curation tools.

Currently, we're using Quuu and Feedly for most of our curation needs. We've heard good things about BuzzSumo and Reddit as well.

What tools are you using and what do you recommend?

Posting regularly on social is incredibly important. Most brands understand and have heard that.

Unfortunately, consistency has turned into frequency, with brands using automated software to fill their social media queue with tagged articles and other generic content. This falls flat and falls quickly.

The issue becomes that your content isn't necessarily relevant to your ideal prospects and customers. You need to provide quality, valuable content via social. If that means only posting 2-3 times a week, that's far better than posting 2-3 times a day with generic, "throw-it-against-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks" content.

Do understand that this tactic, while effective, takes time. You can expect to wait anywhere from 3-6 months for valuable content to take off. The returns, however, are well worth the wait.

RIP marketing funnel. We hardly knew ye.

Here's the facts... the marketing funnel was always problematic. It took prospects on a journey, but then dropped them out of the bottom once they became customers. There's nowhere else to go. Gone and forgotten.

At the end of the day, customers and customer service needs to be a number one priority for all brands. Remember that your best customers can become your greatest brand advocates and evangelists.

We need to realign our marketing journey and realize that marketing doesn't ever end. Not when someone signs your contract, not when someone pays an invoice. The marketing journey continues.

#YourFirstThousand: A new series for small business owners just starting out on social.

Too many companies and brands use social media just to tell. They bombard everyone and anyone with posts about their services and products. Who knows people like this?

The fact is, if you're not adding anything unique to the conversation, it's unlikely that you'll perform well on social. Social is about connecting with people and having meaningful interactions and conversations. Posts that sell? They're as bad as YouTube pre-roll advertisements or TV commercials.

Instead, try to find your ideal prospects and customers on social. What are they talking about? What are they interested in? How can YOUR company or brand add value to that conversation?

Adding value is what can set you apart in the noise of social.

There's always such a buzz around the phrase "organic growth". Many companies, brands and individuals are obsessed with growing organically and reject the notion of paying for social media advertising. This is a completely wrong notion, however.

The fact is that paid advertising is not only incredibly inexpensive and disproportionally priced on social media, but it also generates the largest amount of growth when used properly.
