We are delighted to announce a landmark $25 million gift from USC Trustees Gayle and Edward Roski to endow and name the USC Gayle and Edward Roski Eye Institute at Keck Medicine of USC.

Gayle and Ed Roski’s gift is an incredible vote of confidence in the work we do. Their support of USC has been unwavering over the decades and we are humbled that they have chosen to invest in our faculty and our work. This gift will enable us to advance eye research in fields such as ocular imaging, drug delivery, dry eye, stem cell-based therapies and public health and policy. These funds will also establish a surgical training laboratory for teaching the most advanced surgical skills to the next generation of eye surgeons.

The impact of this gift is immense: the USC Roski Eye Institute is now uniquely positioned for continued growth and excellence in the field of ophthalmology. With this gift, we will continue to make progress toward our most ambitious goal — eliminating blindness.

Please join us in thanking Gayle and Ed Roski!

Please join me in congratulating Biju B. Thomas, PhD, for receiving funding from BrightFocus Foundation for his macular degeneration research. Thomas will be conducting an in-depth analysis of a novel approach to transplant human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial (iPS-RPE) for the treatment of age related macular degeneration (AMD). The proposed studies will be conducted in a new immunodeficient rat disease model developed in his lab. USC Eye Institute has already begun enrollment for a phase 1 clinical trial using this stem cell-based approach.

PROSE (Prosthetic replacement of the ocular surface ecosystem) treatment is helping those who have severe dry eyes causing unbearable pain. Dr. Gloria Chiu, OD, FAAO, of the USC Eye Institute is one of the few eye care providers on the West coast to offer this treatment, utilizing custom scleral prosthetic devices, for patients like Rebecca. Following a bone marrow transplant for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Rebecca was diagnosed with Graft Versus Host Disease, which has side effects of decreased tear production and increased ocular surface inflammation.
