We stayed here on 2 separate nights in July. This is an oasis of a hotel situated in downtown San Jose. On the first night we had the family room which was very good for a family of 4. On the second we shared a room with 2 double beds, which had plenty of room. The rooms are very comfortable. The building is beautiful with great charm. The staff are always helpful and organised our transfer to the airport ($30 for 4 people) which is around 20-30 minutes away. We also had an evening meal in the restaurant. This is a stunning setting. It is about a 15 minute walk to the centre of San Jose and the cab cost ~$5.

This hotel has real quality and is worth staying in, if in San Jose

Room Tip: Family room is very good value if travelling with kids.

This blogger writes: The Hotel Grano de Oro has long been downtown San José’s most elegant boutique hotel. And their in-house restaurant has always been one of my favorites. But they’ve kicked things up several notches of late. Invited for another look on a recent night, I was surprised—and often wowed—by some of the changes and improvements.

We spent our first night in CR at the Grano de Oro before going to Arenal. There are not enough words of praise for this hotel. It was actually a house that was converted into a very nice, elegant, Victoria style hotel. We stayed in a superior room with two beds which was great for us that were traveling with our 9 year old son. I loved the decor, the wood floors, the space and every touch in the room and bathroom. It had a very good size! We were lucky to have breakfast in the restaurant because service and the ambience in the open patio were perfect. They offer complimentary wifi too. Owners of this hotel should buy more hotels all over the world and take their very nice taste and high standards everywhere. Services was also very good.

A lovely place right smack in downtown San Jose, in one of the old "barrios" who used to be reserved for the higher classes. The menu is heavily influenced by French cuisine and the ambiance is excellent to go with that. They have an extensive wine list and cocktails are top quality (try the Martini selections!). Reservations are encouraged, they will take walk-ins but it takes some luck and it is not going to happen on Friday or Saturday night.

This boutique hotel is so beautiful. The room was clean and the little patio attached to the room was wonderful. We ate at the elegant hotel restaurant 3 times out of our 2 day stay, each time ordering all three courses and multiple drinks. I had the french fizz cocktail and the mojito (which rivaled the best from the states and south america). Not only did the beauty of the hotel and the quality of the food impress me, but the service was wonderful as well. There was a gentleman (manager maybe) at the restaurant, Alvaro, that helped me find my 2 year old son's yellow tractor that he left behind...I could hear the whole restaurant team on their walky talkies communicating to find it. That was just the kind of service that made me want to take the time to write this review. Kudos to you, Alvaro, and the rest of the Hotel Grano De Oro owners and staff. We will definitely be back!

If unfamiliar with the area the location might seem difficult to reach. But once you are there the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the building is beautiful, the rooms are clean, the beds comfortable. And at the restaurant I ate the best meal I've had in a very one time.
