We stayed here on 2 separate nights in July. This is an oasis of a hotel situated in downtown San Jose. On the first night we had the family room which was very good for a family of 4. On the second we shared a room with 2 double beds, which had plenty of room. The rooms are very comfortable. The building is beautiful with great charm. The staff are always helpful and organised our transfer to the airport ($30 for 4 people) which is around 20-30 minutes away. We also had an evening meal in the restaurant. This is a stunning setting. It is about a 15 minute walk to the centre of San Jose and the cab cost ~$5.

This hotel has real quality and is worth staying in, if in San Jose

Room Tip: Family room is very good value if travelling with kids. http://ow.ly/d4G9J

This blogger writes: The Hotel Grano de Oro has long been downtown San José’s most elegant boutique hotel. And their in-house restaurant has always been one of my favorites. But they’ve kicked things up several notches of late. Invited for another look on a recent night, I was surprised—and often wowed—by some of the changes and improvements. http://ow.ly/cZp7c

We spent our first night in CR at the Grano de Oro before going to Arenal. There are not enough words of praise for this hotel. It was actually a house that was converted into a very nice, elegant, Victoria style hotel. We stayed in a superior room with two beds which was great for us that were traveling with our 9 year old son. I loved the decor, the wood floors, the space and every touch in the room and bathroom. It had a very good size! We were lucky to have breakfast in the restaurant because service and the ambience in the open patio were perfect. They offer complimentary wifi too. Owners of this hotel should buy more hotels all over the world and take their very nice taste and high standards everywhere. Services was also very good. http://ow.ly/cMdt9

Hotel
Situated on a shady street just off Paseo Colon, San Jose’s main thoroughfare, Hotel Grano de Oro is a true oasis in the heart of the city. Converted from a Tropical Victorian mansion, the 40-room hotel maintains the warmth and comfort of a private home with all the amenities of a fine hotel. Service is paramount and the perpetually smiling staff of the Hotel Grano de Oro welcome guests to their “home away from home” time and again.

We stayed here the first night of our honeymoon/ vacation and the last night. We had amazing rooms both nights, clean, well appointed, nice modern bathrooms, air conditioning and ceiling fans, as well as TV and WiFi. The first room had a small private garden with a fountain and patio which was a free upgrade and very romantic. We took advantage of the roof top jacuzzis, which were great after a day spent in airports, planes and taxis. We had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant, the food and service were excellent for both melas. We also were able to walk to several attractions nearby easily and safely. I highly recommend this hotel.

If you happen to have a night (or two) in San Jose and prefer to stay in the heart of the capitol, Grano de Oro is the best boutique hotel! PLUS, the restaurant at Grano de Oro is one of the best in the city (if not all Costa Rica), making it an easy choice for dinner. The rooms are comfortable and come with all the essentials with larger suites and 2-bedroom options available for families. The rooftop jacuzzis are a nice way to unwind in the evening after an international flight (or in preparation for one). You can easily walk to nearby cafes, bars, and restaurants, but a taxi is recommended at dark. ~Theresa Parent, Central America Vacation.

It doesn't have the reputation as the best hotel in town without reason. Truly a pleasure from beginning to end. And eat at the restaurant!

Located in the downtown area of San Jose is a classic Victorian style mansion hotel where one exquisite dining can be experienced. Food is excellent... meant to be savoured and satiety satisfied. The service is outstanding with superb friendly bilingual waiters. Simply Romantic. Worth a few more extra extra bucks but overall, the experience is worth it.
