I was looking up inspiration for a place name, and I came across this cool collection of sci-fi themed restaurants and bars...Very creative stuff! Thought some of you folks might enjoy seeing it, if you haven't already.

You may never get to drink at the Cantina -- but you can still visit some real-life watering holes that celebrate your favorite stories. We've already shown you science-fictional bars we'd like to visit and people whose homes are based on spaceships, but here are real joints that boast a TARDIS, AT-ATs or the Martian landscape.

Thanks Julie. Someone else already put us onto this and it seems to work well so far - we are experimenting with an event page as we speak - and just looking at how it works with the expiry date etc. Think it's the way to go and will know more bySunday. Think we will repost the competition as an event on Sunday but will confirm once we've tested out a few things. Mirthxx

Today, Elon Musk tweeted that he’s named two of his spaceport drone ships in the most fitting way: after ships from science fiction writer Iain M. Banks’ Culture novels. How way cool is that!!

This month's Camera Photo Competition starts tomorrow at midday gmt. This month's theme is SOLITUDE as chosen by last month's winner.

Hope you all come along and play - even just to chat and vote if you are not taking part.

Hope to see you there

THEME: SOLITUDE

Rules:
Photos must be taken fresh for the competition
(not taken from your archives)

No photoshopping - except cropping and balance.

How it works :
Add your photo to this event. Photos can be added upto Midday on April 22nd. Everyone can vote (using the plus one) at anytime up to midday on April 25th. At this point the photo with the most points wins. In the event of a tie, I will step back and decide on the winner.

Good luck everyone and remember to have fun.

Hi All,  I sent this out to members individually, but now realise it misses new members so I've resent to dgeek community as a whole.  Obviously if you've already joined or posted you don't need to do any more.  To those of you yet to join, remember you can still vote even if you aren't taking part.  Hope to see you there.

Camera Photo Competition - March 2015

THEME - BLACK AND WHITE
(end date extended from Feb 22nd to March 22nd)

As Google circles does not allow us to add photos to comments (as originally planned) we have had to rethink the format and so will now be hosted by Google events. The competition will be judged by you, dgeekers, by using the plus one options to vote for your favourite. In the event of a tie the author of the event will withdraw from the competition and vote the winner unless David contacts us to advise he is available.

On the rare occasions that David is available he will no doubt comment and recommend a winner, but we will have a winner regardless of his busy schedule.

The competition ends on the 22nd, with a further two days for all votes to factor in and the winner announced on the 25th of the month - giving the winner four days to think of a theme for the following month and the creator of the event to create and issue the following months event.

The original rules apply:
The photo must be created specifically for the current theme and not taken from your archives

Only basic manipulation allowed - contrast, brightness, cropping, etc.

Think that's all folks except of course to wish you all good luck and remind you to have fun.

Mirthxx

If you wish to be removed from the photo events notification, please let me know and I will remove you from the list on any future events

I want this! ..........

This would be so amazing. It reminds me of the holoband from Caprica. Sort of....

....and like a dozen other similar devices from sci-fi. I love the idea of bringing the internet/computer world into our physical world using VR AR.

Imagine not even having a TV. Just a spot on the wall where your HoloLens will simulate a screen on. You can all sync up and watch something together, or all be watching different things at the same time. Need to use the restroom? Just have the virtual TV follow you and play on the bathroom wall.

I'd imagine interacting with things would be a challenge. To see exactly where you're "grabbing" or pointing to and what you intend to do.

Wow - is it just me or is there a new artist assigned to clouds - they seem to be getting more spectacular
