I've been spending this rainy day reading my roommate's 1946 Life magazines. The ads are more interesting than anything else. Some choice quotes:

"It's holiday time--time to remember your folks and friends with a thoughtful, appreciated greeting--a telegram." -Western Union Telegram

"MORE DOCTORS SMOKE CAMELS THAN OTHER OTHER CIGARETTE" -with M and D in red, Camels

"PRE-WAR QUALITY" -Schenley Reserve whiskey

Underneath a picture of a chubby-cheeked toddler: "The babies in most of the rest of the world were (and still are) badly undernourished. A healthy, husky boy is a good symbol of the U.S., and we're glad we had a hand in helping supply him with plenty of the right foods. . . . . Dedicated to the wider use and better understanding of dairy products as human food." -Kraft, Sealtest, and Breyers, National Dairy Products Corporation

Wow, this just made me realize that at the time this magazine was printed, my grandparents had recently moved to Vietnam from our ancestral village in southern China. They had left on foot, fleeing starvation and occupying Japanese forces. Weird. I guess they probably were not bearing healthy, husky children at the time.
