Sorry that I couldn't make the meetup yesterday. I was thinking about our last meeting today and I recalled that Lawrence had mentioned markets and auctions in relation to managing resources on a mesh. I really like this idea. If there are several valuable capacities a mesh offers then it seems like a good idea to have a way to trade capacities (e.g. bandwidth sharing for compute sharing) and to have an exchange rate based on supply and demand. That way if, for instance, the compute resources become overwhelmed the value of a compute resource unit would go up on the market, incentivising people to share more compute units in exchange for, say, storage or bandwidth units.

I hope you guys had a good meeting. I'm still excited about this idea. Also, there is an upcoming course on coursera.org about software defined networking. I don't think I'll have time to take it but someone else may want to check it out.

It was a good meeting! David and Jonathan showed up and we talked algorithms, theory, and applications. Jonathan made a toy node simulator that uses Globally unique identifiers to identify nodes. It's written in Javascript, so in theory the routing algorithm can be tweaked from the side bar. It still has some bugs and I want to port it to node.js, but it's an interesting first step.

This is a book by David Gelertner about his "Mirror Worlds" idea. I think these ideas are a great fit for local mesh networks.

P.S. I had to install tcl and tk (this is in Arch x86_64). I had a bunch of other stuff already installed so not sure what all the dependencies are.

Some of the folks at MIT Media Lab are going to be offering a MOOC about how to go about learning new things in a flexible way.

Interestingly, this course is based on a new open source piece of software known as  the "Mechanical MOOC". Anyone can start a MOOC of their own using this customizable platform!  - (http://goo.gl/MgFmA)

Here's a direct link to the course outline and readings: http://learn.media.mit.edu/course.html - I think the most interesting reading might be this one http://metameso.org/~joe/narayanan.pdf (copied to my web page so that I can offer a direct link).

Clean, large space with comfortable furniture and local artwork. Coffee taste great, prices include tax and there is plenty of free self-serve water. Plus, WIFI is free and reliable and there's a small library in the back that's good for random inspiration. One of my favorite places to go!
