I loved playing Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) as a high school and college student. Yes, I'm a nerd and proud of it. I never imagined that it was preparing its players for story-telling. D&D turns 40 this year and has been influential to many notable writers. #writing #amwriting

Did you play D&D? Go on, you can tell. Your secret is safe with me! ;-)

Dungeons & Dragons, the first commercially available role-playing game that is now 40 years old, influenced numerous writers and taught them the art of storytelling.

Looks like Amazon is close to rolling out Kindle Unlimited which provides access to 600,000 ebooks and audiobooks for $9.99 per month.

http://the-digital-reader.com/2014/07/16/amazon-launch-new-ebook-subscription-service-called-kindle-unlimited/#.U8cDxEKwK8E
Word is circulating on Twitter and the KBoards forum  today that Amazon is about to launch a new ebook service. Details are still vague, but at this point I know that about 6 hours ago several authors noticed that there was a new page in the Kindle Store. That page was shortly taken down, but …

Here's a great idea from Patricia La Barbera about how to use the Writer's Knowledge Base: "[F]ormulate a custom-tailored writing course by choosing a subject and reading at least one article a day."

Yep, you can easily do that with the WKB. Why not start today and become a better writer now? #writing #amwriting

The flip-side of my last post regarding unlimited ebook services and writers is what it means to readers. They benefit greatly, of course.

It’s happened too many times to count: You plop down money for a new book, full of promise, then get a few chapters into it and — horrors! — realize that it’s not actually that good. There goes anothe...

As unlimited ebook reading services grow, income for authors will likely go down. What are your thoughts on this trend? #writing

Catherine, I haven't yet seen the details on how Amazon will pay authors, either. However, one of the points the article makes is that the most lucrative customers will now only pay a capped fee thereby reducing the amount of money in play. So, to me, that would limit what you are able to charge for a book because there is a fixed amount of money from which Amazon can pay you. They definitely won't take a loss.

On the other hand, maybe unlimited plans will spur more reading from the traditionally less lucrative readers and volume will increase.

Interesting times! Thanks for your insights.
