Usually, the problem with Guillermo del Toro’s movies is they favor style over substance — or, rather, they struggle to balance his strong visual approach, which can be overwhelming, with what is often a meager plot with fluffy characters. Del Toro’s new flick, ‘Crimson Peak’, looks to surrender completely to the ‘del Toro look’. This is pure hard-baked gothic eye candy.

Thing is, it looks to have a strong plot with deep characters so, go figure. I’m on board.

Here's a must-see clip from 'Timbuktu'. Beautiful and horrifying in equal measure.

A couple days ago I mentioned Jacob Swinney’s Vimeo video about the use of sound in Quentin Tarantino’s movies. Swinney does a nice job and, to be sure Tarantino always puts ambient sound to good use, but one of his best shots is missing — the tracking shot following Butch (Bruce Willis) as he makes his way to his apartment to get his father’s watch.

This is one of the most suspenseful shots I’ve seen. I was scared watching this in the theater. Always expecting someone to jump out from behind something, or for a shot to ring out, and it’s because of the random, natural urban noise. It puts you in the character’s skin, immerses you in his world and situation. Makes you cringe wondering what's going to happen next.

Great stuff.

@firstshowing is saying http://bit.ly/1zIo3X6  Neill Blomkamp might do an Alien movie. Can't imagine a better director for that gig.

I love this quote: “They marketed the heck out of this movie, and it was still tough to bring people through the door.” - Paul Dergarabedian regarding 'Jupiter Ascending' which made $19m in its US debut this weekend.

Yeah, you know, after a point, after just so much bad press, additional marketing doesn't make people want to see the movie, it makes them want to avoid it more than they did before.

I was surprised by this quote from Manohla Dargis in her review of 'Seventh Son': "Every year, in between the big heave known as the fall awards season and that folly we call the Academy Awards, the major movie companies turn into a cinematic slag heap of the bad, the risible and the inexplicable."

Coming from a film critic that statement seems off. I can't remember her dissing the Oscars. I know a lot of people do, myself included, but not her.
