I've noticed this myself, there's just so much fewer insects around. Grasshoppers for example seem to have almost totally vanished from the countryside (possibly victims of pesticide)

Seems like the end permian mass extinction wasn't as extreme as previously thought, tho still the biggest in the history of life. The major mass extinctions listed in the paper (follow published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences link, the paper is pretty technical), are Late Ordovician, late Devonian, mid/late Carboniferous, mid Permian, end Permian, and end Cretaceous. Not included are the end Edicarian and several Cambrian extinction events. The two late Triassic mass extinctions don't seem to have been such a big deal, tho they did wipe out a number of animal groups. Hence the popular term "Sixth Extinction" is misleading, it should be the Seventh Extinction (which gives it a more melodramatic feel, like The Seventh Seal and all that bible stuff)
