We live in a digital world where speed is of the essence and information and pictures are shared instantly on our screens. They then disappear from view in our facebook timelines or in the depths of our computer hard drive never to be seen again. As if we hadn’t actually taken the image in the first place.

I feel very passionately that you should come away with something physical from your photography session. Why? Well let me explain… When I was little my Mum was the chief photographer and we would treat ourselves to a roll of film for a family holiday. Mum would get the film developed and once we had all had an ogle and Mum had selected the best for the frames they would be stored in an ice cream tub in the top of Mum’s wardrobe. “So what?” I hear you say.

Well that very same ice cream tub has been retrieved at family get-togethers and at special events and we as a family have sat around a table and passed the photographs and albums around. In doing so we talked about people, places and the relationships we shared. We have laughed and cried over these photographs. They are a part of our history and looking at them brings us together as a family. We have never huddled around the computer in quite the same way.

So I want you to come away with a little bit of history so that you too might one day huddle around your kitchen table and talk about people and places with your family, their children and many generations that follow.

The motivation behind my imagery:
Photographs are very important to me. Don’t get me wrong I am not wildly vain. I am just forgetful. Days and weeks go by and people and places around me are constantly changing. Houses get renovated from rubble to home, baby follows bump and one generation follows another. Life flies by and so taking pictures, for someone forgetful like me is the only way to record moments… to spark conversations about years gone by when I’m old and grey.

Life flies by and so taking pictures, for someone forgetful like me is the only way to record moments… to spark conversations about years gone by when I’m old and grey.
I shoot for people like me. People who are after a natural and honest representation of how life is at this moment in time. Not just a cheesy grin but a piece of very personal art. Something that tells you about the people, their personality and their relationships with other people or places.  This may be for family or for a growing business.
Whatever the subject, the story is personal.

I’m shy too!
As I mentioned above I am not a vain person.  In fact I am really quite shy and am not massively keen on being on the other side of the camera. For this reason I am able to empathise with my clients who value the importance of photography but might not be very keen on the process.

In my shoots, regardless of if they are a family shoot, boudoir, musician or commercial lifestyle shoot, I go to great lengths to make sure you are relaxed and at ease.  This is when the natural imagery is created that you will love.

All my shoots are carried out on location to give a truly personal experience built around you, making your images that bit different from everyone else’s.

It is amazing the little nooks and crannies that you find in Devon tucked away. I get to experience some of Devon’s most beautiful surroundings from beaches to moorland, to woodland, farmland to people’s own, very individual homes.

As you will read on my products page I am very keen that people come away with something physical from their session rather than digital files. I have spent considerable time researching some of the finest craftsmen to deliver
these products- anything from print boxes to framed artwork, storyboards to fine art books.  You will come away with something really beautiful to tell your story and pass down through generations. Come and find out more here.

A bit about me:
I am a born and bred Devonshire lass. Mum to the little bundle of energy that is Josh and wife to the lovely Matt (who doubles up as my IT expert). My favourite place in the world is the beach. I have a hunger for travel but I can also be found on a weekend happily digging over the veggie patch, pottering in my greenhouse or having wheel barrow races with our neighbours children. In between the chaos of just living each day I love to shoe horn in a little time for cooking, baking and (when the little man goes to bed ontime) sewing. I know, very rock and roll!
I thank my Mum for recording my family story for me to keep and pass down through generations – first steps, the birthdays, holidays and all the little things (which are the big things) in between. In doing so she has instilled the importance of photography in me to record my own story and that of others.  You can find out more about me in the ‘About Jess’ gallery below.

I’m Jess and I tell stories with my photography. I tell stories about people, families and businesses documented in the most natural, unobtrusive and above all artistic manner. All my location shoots take advantage of our beautiful Devon surroundings, providing a backdrop for your truly unique imagery. You may have arrived here if you are a parent looking to record some family history with a family portrait session or a woman looking to record some femininity with a boudoir session.   Alternatively you may be a musician or business venture needing commercial imagery for promotional use.

Whatever your reason for coming please do feel free to scoot around the whole site.  You can get a feel for the services that I offer through the collections menu above and find out a bit more about me, why I shoot the way I do and what I aim to achieve for you in terms of a beautiful end product.  You can also view my most recent work on my blog.
If you have a shoot in mind that you’d like to discuss further please do not hesitate to get in touch using the contact link.  I’d love to hear from you!

So today’s blog post is all about a commercial photography shoot that I recently carried out for the Devon based Culmstock Chilli Company run by the lovely Nigel and Coralie.    A fantastic example of what quite literally started up as a seedling of an idea and has grown into a successful  local industry nurturing  a huge selection of chilli plants for customers to grow on their windowsill.
The Commercial Photography Brief:
Nigel and Coralie both recognised the need for beautiful, eye catching imagery to accompany their stunning new website.  This new shop front needed to look beautiful to enable them to start selling online alongside the festival and events that they were already doing.  There were several elements to their shoot and all were around the need to personalise their business.  They were not after generic imagery – this was all about their business and brand, their chillies and their story.
Environmental Portraits:
An important element of the shoot was to introduce you to Nigel.   As you can imagine… a shirt and tie formal commercial headshot was not going to cut it here.  It would say nothing about Nigel or the business that he is in.  It was far more important to capture Nigel in his natural surroundings (!) so this is where environmental portraiture comes in.  It says so much more than a typical head and shoulders passport photograph does.  It was all about bringing elements of who they are and what their brand was all about.

The process:
A behind the scenes look at the business.  These images were designed to show the story of what goes on behind the scenes from planting the seed to watering and regular health checks.  All of this ensuring that each plant grows to be big and strong ready for the customers windowsill.

The product:
This was obviously an important element of the shoot showing off these beautiful chillies.  We shot close up images of the chillies on the plants so customers could see the differences between the huge variety of chillies when purchasing online.  We also shoot some styled imagery of the chillies paying close consideration to the need for these images to be on brand with a rustic backdrop.

Using images on the website:
You can see here how the photographs were used on their website – lovely and big and bold to create eye catching imagery.  They are used through the website but you can see below examples from their blog page, contact us page, our range page and the ‘caring for your plant’ page.

ThrowbackThursday: This is where it all started for me. I had an MDU (affectionate name for a mobile display unit) which I used to work from to sell my pictorial artwork. This particular outing was of great significance as I met the lovely Andy Green who opened up my world to photographing people. And, well here I am 10 years later with people at the heart of my business. Find out more about our portrait sessions on the website (Image by my dear Mum ... the creator and guardian of our family history) http://www.perspectivesphotography.co.uk/children-families
