According to Pike Research, almost 200,000 plug-in electric cars and trucks equipped with vehicle-to-building (V2B) technology will be sold through 2020. The company said that from 2012 to 2020, investment in that space will total $279 million.

That’s a lot of money. V2B and its vehicle-to-grid (V2G) cousin show a lot of promise, even if not a lot of commercial application yet. Some years ago, in California, I watched an electric meter spin back as the battery pack in a Google-sponsored Toyota Prius returned power to the grid. The company teamed up on V2G with Pacific Gas & Electric, which remains interested in it.

This article is about the much-improved two new batteries that may be offered in the 2015 Volt, entering production in 2014: http://www.thestreet.com/story/11947283/1/the-dramatically-improved-chevrolet-volt-20.html

Awesome.

True story… this just happened on my way to work.

I am pulling up to 2 available pumps at my local gas station in my 2013 Chevy Volt. An older woman in an 2005 Saab cuts in front of me and steals the first pump. I stop and go around her and proceed to use the 2nd pump. While we are both out of our cars pumping gas she proceeds to apologize for cutting me off and explains she only uses her current pump because it has a handle lock and none of the other don’t and it hurts her hand to hold the gas pump trigger for over 5 minutes due to her arthritis.

I look at her (smiling) and proceed to say to her “Its ok I don’t really need gas anymore”.  She looks at me not understating how the Volt works and says “You need to be a smart a** I said I was sorry”.  For the next 15 minutes I proceed to explain to her how the Chevy volt works how since owning the car in October I have put in gas about 6 times saving me over $390 a month! I even let her power up the car and showed her how my battery was almost full and that I was stopping in to top off my gas tank out of habit not because I needed to (I also wanted lottery tickets). Finally I showed her the OnStar app and proved to her my savings and she was amazed and wants to get one.

It’s funny how things happened sometimes :)

Congratulations! I use L when I'm in stop and go traffic and when I want to drive "sporty". But you loose out on the benefits of coasting if you live in L all the time. The Volt generally works best if you just drive normally using well known energy saving habits. Avoid jackrabbit starts and hard braking. Regen happens in D as well a L and the brakes are managed electronically to balance between regen and friction so light braking is the same regen as using L. Really, just drive and enjoy. The car will do the rest.

Just got done attending a local Volt Clinic, thanks to Courtesy Chevrolet. We got to talk to electrification engineers from Detroit and talk their ears off with suggestions. Part of the tour was to show up the service department where they had a battery and transmission removed for you to walk around and see.

Wow. That's such a great idea! Engaging owners who are geeky is only going to make them even more happy with their car.

I wish we had something like this in the UK. At the moment though, only a handful of dealers even sell the Volt/Ampera. In my case, there's only three Volt dealers -- and many Ampera dealers don't want to know about the Volt... :/
