Plein Air Painting "As Dusk Approaches"
16" x 20" Acrylic on Canvas
http://vgottdrawings.com
As dusk approaches, the natural color and appearance of the Sonoran Desert landscape magically transitions into dramatic hues of purples, blues, oranges, pinks and deep greens. Far off distant details slowly melt and blend together till eventually it's an abstract impression of solid shapes. With the choir of crickets singing out and the coyotes howling for their nightly gather, it's time to make it down the ridge while there's still enough light to see a wondering rattler along the path. This is my favorite place and time of day for capturing such a moment, in spite of the many annoying gnats that arrive faithfully for the Monsoon season. They dash about madly. Crashing into my eyes, diving into my coffee and thrashing about in my paint. Truly an en plein air painting experience.

Plein Air Painting "Sonoran Spring Light"
16" x 20" Acrylic on Canvas
After a cold winter the spring season moves through the desert landscape with renewed life for all that is touched. Mesquites among Palo Verdes bloom yellow and green, filling the air with their sweet fragrances. As the late afternoon approaches dusk the busy buzz and flutter of nature slows. It's in this moment the landscape reflects the rejuvenated desert colors.

Plein Air Painting "Palo Verdes At Sunset"
16" x 20" Acrylic on Canvas
The end of the Spring season is coming on. Can feel traces of Summer on the edges of Spring. Soon the comfortable mild temperatures will give way to those of the earth scorching hot arid summer. For this moment the Palo Verdes, dressed in their vibrant yellow blooms, take pleasure among the Sonoran landscape as the sun slowly sets. The day comes to an end.

"Escaping Into Late Winter Light" Plein Air Painting
20" x 16" Acrylic on Canvas

A winter late afternoon, the time of day the sun is low in the fading blue sky as it magically transitions into shades of pinks and oranges.
Long cool shadows travel along the Sonoran Desert floor sculpting the trees and low growing shrubs of the landscape.

Painting is rapid, capturing the light, color and sense of the desert wonders.

When the coyotes below began howling, I knew that was my call  to pack-up and leave the ridge as night had begun to fall.

Contents Interior Design, Tucson, Arizona - "A Cool Collection of Contemporary Cacti" juried art exhibition accepted plein air work "Late Afternoon Mesquites". Enjoyed painting this piece ... coyotes were gathering and howling down below beyond the trees. During the dead of the desert heat, 110 degrees, this grouping of Mesguites in the late afternoon were so refreshing to view.
