I think I need to -- I have a friend who tells me it was the best movie of the year.  The consensus is that a lot of worked and a lof it didn't.  I read the book, which is actually 9 stories.  Each of the stories is in a different genre, and is told in a different style.  It takes awhile to get into, but once you are able to access it, it becomes something remarkable.  People have likened the book to Melville or Faulkner, a Great American Novel.

A lot of film critics went gaga over The Master.  I saw it on 70mm at The Coolidge Corner, and it was something to behold, if for the sheer fact that it is perhaps the only modern film to be shot on 70mm.  And the whole thing was very filmic.  It wasn't really about scientology as much as it was about a troubled friendship between two men over time.  And on that level it was really interesting, with two fantastic performances at it's core.  Joquim Phoenix gives a very mannered, very method performance, whereas Phillip Seymour Hoffman hands in another miracle of a performance.   It didn't resonate with me much, although I was able to appreciate it objectively.  I hear it gets better with subsequent viewings.  And the Johnny Greenwood via Radiohead soundtrack is unworldly.
