#PCOS Polycystic Ovary Syndrome as a significant health concern demanding national attention and government support.

PCOS is not one thing. It is not one disease. PCOS is a set of symptoms. The key primary symptom is failure to ovulate regularly. Failure to ovulate is why you are deficient in estradiol and progesterone. It’s why you have high testosterone, and why you develop secondary PCOS symptoms such as hair loss, acne, and infertility.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is broken down into two main sub-categories:

Deficiency

-Kidney yang deficiency
-Kidney yin deficiency
-Spleen qi deficiency

Excess

-Phlegm dampness
-Liver stagnation with heat
-Blood stasis

The most common manifestation of PCOS is dampness and/or phlegm in the body. However, PCOS is often complicated with patterns of deficiency and excess.

Don’t be too quick to accept a PCOS diagnosis. Proper diagnosis requires a blood test that shows high testosterone or other male hormones like androstenedione or DHEA. Never accept a diagnosis that was made by ultrasound alone.

Poor sperm quality affects about one in 10 men and may lead to fertility problems. These men also have an increased risk of developing testicular cancer, which is the most common malignant disease of young males. And, even if they don’t develop testicular cancer, men with poor sperm quality tend to die younger than men who don’t have fertility problems.

Fertile - Get Your Body Ready For Baby making

Is there a way we can actually change the quality of our own eggs?

The quality of the egg declines with age but this is an area of medicine that is looking to improve the end stage development of the egg. And there are simple steps that can be taken to help things along the way. Melatonin is the hormone secreted at night and it can be taken as supplement. Research suggests that higher levels of Melatonin found in the fluid surrounding the developing follicles produced larger follicles during IVF and neutralise free radicals (that can cause disease). Melatonin can be achieved by exposure to sunlight so walk to work in the morning if you can. And avoid light at the end of the day from computers and phones as these can deplete it.”

Acupuncture, which improves blood flow to the ovaries, regularly visiting your dentist (gum disease is associated with pre-term labour) and increasing your Vitamin D intake, which is said to make the uterus more receptive.

Spleen Qi Deficiency

The spleen is an organ that doesn’t really get discussed very much in relation to the other organs of the body. We quite often see patients who suffer from a spleen qi deficiency but they are unsure what that is. The role of the spleen in Chinese medicine is very different to the role of the spleen in western medicine.
The spleen plays a very important role in Chinese medicine. It, paired with stomach, are the main organs responsible for digestion and the distribution of food and nutrients throughout the body. The spleen extracts qi from the food we eat that is used by the body to build immunity (wei qi), keep things moving freely (stagnation can lead to disease), helps other organs to function properly and regulate mental functions and emotions.

A deficiency of spleen qi can be caused by many things. Eating a diet of mostly refined, highly processed foods where the body is not receiving enough nourishment. Another cause is our hectic lifestyle. If the spleen is constantly overloaded, then it will become exhausted, leading to spleen qi deficiency.
Some symptom of spleen qi deficiency to look out for:
• Weakness of the whole body
• Fatigue
• Loose stool with undigested food
• Weak pulse
• Weak muscles
• A pale tongue with a thin white coat and teeth marks on the sides
• Prolapse of organs (such as haemorrhoids, uterus, bladder, intestines)

If you are thinking about having a baby or are currently pregnant, it is important to understand the changes that you are or will be experiencing with your hormones, posture and body mechanics. Since your body must prepare to carry and feed your baby, the following changes may occur:

As the baby grows, your center of gravity shifts forward, the pelvis tilts forward – which may cause lower back muscles to shorten and tighten, and the hamstring and gluteal muscles to weaken and stretch. The cervical and lumbar regions of the spine experience additional stress in the neck and lower back. Attached to the uterus are round ligaments, which are under a great deal of stress. They may become stretched and pain in the lower back and abdomen may result. Certain muscles – psoas, piriformis, etc., become tight and cause pain.Ligaments may become loose due to hormonal changes. This may cause joints to become less stable. Due to a protruding abdomen, increased curvature of the back, along with pelvic changes and adaptations in posture… a misalignment of the spine and joints often result. When the pelvis is misaligned, the amount of room available for the growing baby may become reduced (intrauterine constraint). A misaligned pelvis may also make if more difficult for the baby to be placed into the best position for delivery.

Western doctors treat problems that patients have; Eastern doctors treat patients who have problems. "Western medicine has a tendency to stop or alter processes. Just think about the names of our medicines: antibiotics, antihistamines, interferon; where Acupuncture enhances the body's inherent ability to heal itself."
