Wood flooring used as shower tile, brown kitchen hues in lieu of stainless steel, vertical gardens and more from the Dwell on Design show in Los Angeles: http://lat.ms/1PTSpPO
Wood panel applications are hot at this year's Dwell on Design show at the Los Angeles Convention Center, with Stikwood, IndoTeak Design, Mirth Studios and Semihandmade sharing new wood applications for bath, kitchen and home. Other trends include a move away from stainless steel in the kitchen to brown and black tones, plus delicate handcrafted lighting and colorful outdoor furnishings. Here's a selection of what's on display at the 2015 show, w...

Over the last 25 years, the provocative and philosophical Dutch designer Marcel Wanders has created home furnishings for dozens of big-ticket European firms, plates and cutlery for Alessi and KLM airlines, compacts for MAC cosmetics and a Christmas collection for Target. How do you build a house in a steep hillside lot in the Hollywood Hills? Los Angeles architect Ana Henton found a way: http://lat.ms/1Krhb6q
Architect Ana Henton is accustomed to demanding clients: restaurateurs, theater owners and even a college fraternity eager to ditch its stripper pole in favor of Streamline Moderne design. Yet none was as challenging as her client for a 2,400-square-foot house in the Hollywood Hills: herself.

Garden party: New garden-inspired wallcoverings for summer: http://lat.ms/1Q1C0ne
If the dire predictions are to be believed, Southern California will turn into parched desert in the not too distant future (though one hopes a “Mad Max” mentality doesn’t take hold as well). With water restrictions already in place, extremely conscientious homeowners are already pulling out the roses and bougainvillea and replacing them with drought-tolerant species like apricot mallow, purple sage and a variety of native grasses (a few extremis...

What to do with kale blossoms: http://lat.ms/1JwWiW4
Are gardeners happy when their kale starts to bolt? To the best of my knowledge, they are not. Because as attractive as we non-gardeners may find the tiny pale flowers, the people who mulch them, water them and fight off beetly predators see bolting as the end of the plants’ useful life.

+Double Dog Farm ~ Shoestring Gardening on a KISS Principle It used to be that garlic flower heads were cut and tossed into the compost. Now people who go the farm market buy them to eat and for good reason: they are very tasty. I roast and pesto out of them. Old ones that are too tough can be used for soup stock.

New outdoor furniture designs that are durable and brighten your yard http://lat.ms/1KphY7L
How do you decorate the great outdoor room? Cast-metal furniture can be prohibitively heavy and costly, plastic can topple in heavy winds and teak and other woods are bulky, expensive and need to be oiled.

Really smart piece on @MadMen_AMC influence on contemporary interior design by @davidkeeps: http://lat.ms/1PR6x7m
In its nearly eight years on the air, AMC's period drama "Mad Men" became must-see TV for design professionals and decor fans and, arguably, a boon to the home furnishings industry. The interiors — conceived by production designer Dan Bishop and painstakingly appointed by set decorators Amy Wells in the first three seasons and Claudette Didul thereafter — explored a range of the popular styles of the '60s and early '70s.
