Ride Reports/Mileage  -

Today was one of those horrible days when your nose hair freezes as soon as you step out of the house. The day started at - 29°C with windchill and by now it's "warmed up" to - 23. This is getting really old :-(

Oh no, it's definitely no consolation I'm sure. It's been a long, hard winter for everyone it seems.

Short ride report from cold Montreal
Panorama from the Bellevue Kondiaronk  I got into a severe bout of winter unhappiness this Monday. After a few warmish days, the forecast for the coming week was all in the -20 to -7°C range—certainly not atypical for the end...

It's pretty crisp in Montreal these days, but with my new Moose Mitts I nonetheless went out for a morning ride to take some pictures of the steaming St. Lawrence River. It looks pretty spectacular and made me hate winter a little less. Oh, and riding on the frozen river: great fun!

Only for two reasons one has this clothing: for cold or for a bank robbery. I hope you did this for the first reason ;-))

Blast from the past: Write-up of my first "real" bike camping trip in 2009 now live on my blog.
On this cold winter day, I can very well use some warm memories of the past, in this case from my first "real" bike tour. "Real" because when I was maybe 10 my parents and I had gone on an organized bike tour of the Loire Val...

I'm looking for peer-reviewed (or otherwise credible) studies of approaches to mixing walking and cycling, but no car traffic. I'm familiar with the Shared Space literature, but that usually includes cars in the equation as well. The same is true for studies of bike lanes/paths.

Background: We're trying to create a new approach to cycling on our campus (currently there's a non-enforceable dismount policy).

Any type of literature is welcome -- design guides, safety studies, etc.

+Richard Masoner Re bike lanes: Yes, having bike lanes through campus (which is otherwise mostly car free) is one possible scenario. I'm wondering though if there is any evidence that that's safer than just having shared space, maybe in combination with some measures to slow cyclists (McGill has some fairly steep hills).

Took my new winter bike on its maiden voyage two days ago. Today I was finally brave enough to ride over a completely frozen over trail and while it still felt scary as hell the Marathon Ice Spikers performed very well. Still to come: Pogies.
Oh, and yeah, the frame is not really large enough for me. But whatevs.

Does anyone have recommendations for good winter boots, working both on and off the bike? For riding clipless I have the Lake MX-302's but I need something for still lower temperatures. Easy availability in Canada a plus.

Thanks everyone! I found some classic Sorels at a steep discount yesterday. We'll see how they work on the bike.
