My eldest daughter has recently started her GCSEs.  When she was looking at what subjects to study at GCSE level she had a bit of an interest in IT.  Sadly when we went to the open evening to talk to the course tutors, the IT tutors just took one look at her and said "this is more programming, making computers do things rather than using software like Word and Excel".  They just didn't come across as being enthusiastic, working in IT and being a big geek I was even put off by them and I was really disappointed.  In the end she opted to take GCSE Spanish she doesn't enjoy at all just because she had to choose another GCSE.  I can't help think that they could have shown some enthusiasm and explained the sort of cool stuff she'd be able to do.  Her main subject is Art and Digital Media and I'm sure there would have been ways where the subjects could have overlapped (such as interactive art displays) but she seems to have lost interest now.  Luckily I've got some good friends who are involved with STEM and do some really cool and interesting things with technology (far beyond my knowledge) who are always showing boys and girls of all ages really cool things they can do with technology so maybe she might still be inspired to give it a try.

+Rob Beard It's very easy for women to get a job/ start degree in computer science because of the Equality Act. Women are given priority over higher qualified males to keep the gender ratio as close to 50:50 as possible due to legal requirements. Heck, Google has special programmes for women, like they do for disabled students, all that just to push in under-qualified women! :P

A lot of the time the term 'feminism' is used as an excuse for reverse-sexism.

That's a great help, I am getting a MK2 Focus and have an Alpine head unit with Bluetooth which I wanted to transfer over, seems straightforward enough to do, and being double din I can add a pair of cup holders (I've seen some that will take up the other din slot :-D).  It's great that things have come on so much, I remember nearly 20 years ago hacking the dash to bits on a Mk1 Fiesta to fit a Sony MiniDisc head unit... glad it's so much easier these days.

Okay so I know immigration is one of those sore subjects, and I'll be the first to admit I've bitched about lots of immigrants coming into the country, but you know what, I've actually done some reading up on the whole thing recently and well, it seems that what is covered in the press isn't always the whole story.

Recently I've read shocking stories of couples who are being kept apart because of a silly little thing like not earning enough money (and in some cases, not earning enough, even just £100 too little you'd need £16,000 in savings, plus 2.5x the difference between the minimum amount to sponsor a partner for a visa). Yes that's right £16,000 + in savings, that's money, in the bank that is readily available (nope, loans, own property etc don't count).

Sadly it seems that if you're from another European country and have a non-EU partner you don't have to worry about these rules, you can just settle here with your non-EU partner regardless of how much you're earning and how little savings you have.

Yup, hardly seems fair. Some folks out there do have partners who weren't born in the UK or Europe, partners who want to live with their UK partners, work, pay taxes and enjoy a family life (and no, I don't mean enjoying a family life with just their cat!).

So come on folks, help make a change... at the moment the rules are well, just rushed through and badly thought out, I'm not saying change it so anyone can get a visa, just make it fair... sign this petition and share... who knows if you, a friend, sister, brother etc was to meet their love of their life who just happened to not be from the EU, would you want to be kept apart from them just because of a crazy financial requirement?

Folks, I wouldn't normally ask, but can you sign this petition please and share?  A 7 year old Scottish girl faces being deported to Chile with her mum because her mum split up with the girls Spanish father.  This girl doesn't speak any Spanish and was born in Scotland and has spent her life there.  Surely this girl has the right to stay in the country with her mother.

So today I took a trip down memory lane and tried to create a network over serial using PPP, ping and DNS work but HTTP (TCP) doesn't. So next task is to try Kermit... That's nearly as old as I am!

So I decided to do the April Fools thing this year, upside down internet (told the users the Internet was being routed via Australia) and I built The Internet from The IT Crowd :-)

One of our kittens has gone missing, we think he snuck out of the door on Sunday night. If you see him please could you let me know and share this. He was last seen at our home on Exe Hill in Shiphay, Torquay. He's Black with a distinctive white spot on his chest and white patch on his belly.

Please share this, my daughters are devistated and I'm worried about him out in this cold weather.

The +Exeter Linux User Group now has a Facebook page, if you have friends on Facebook who might have an interest in Linux, Raspberry Pi etc but aren't yet on Google+ then why not point them in the direction of the page?

You can find it at www.facebook.com/ExeterLUG
