Words are power. Telling your story is more powerful.
I am writing to you with the hope that you will stop ruining my life. While you're obsession with my ethnicity is flattering, it has become somewhat apparent to me that you might have gotten the w...

5 Intranet Alternatives

Social media is mounting an ever bolder attack on the ramparts of the trusty company intranet. +Louise Kidney investigates whether rumours of the intranet’s demise are premature, discusses the pros and cons to the alternatives, and concludes that one size most definitely does not fit all.
The intranet’s entire raison d’etre was initially the propagation and presentation of information which for relevance or security reasons could only be revealed to employees of the hosting organisati...

Something which keeps coming up in discussions with parents is the lack of an equivalent to BASIC. There are Coding Dojo's being set up by the likes of @liaonet and +Emma Mulqueeeny is doing awesome things with Rewired State and specifically the Young Rewired State but they require you to be near a major city. For everyone else, what's your entry point?

I wrote about voyeurism and real time news reporting http://louwittering.blogspot.com/2011/07/voyeurism-commentating-real-time.html
Voyeurism, commentating & real time reporting. Voyeurism: An obsessive observation of sordid or sensational subjects. Oslo just exploded. Or, rather, a building within Oslo has just exploded. And ...

Dying hair, sewing broken daisy chain hairbands, frantically packing, collecting paperwork, watching tour de france highlights, massive pile of ironing still to do..... slightly stressed.

I've just realised. Most people reading this wont know why this is such a shit week and will think I'm whining a lot. Hmmm.

You won't see limited updates from anyone unless you are in their circles AND they are in yours. (If you have someone in your circles, but you aren't in theirs, you will still see their public posts).

Basically, when you decide who to share with you are setting the privacy level ie defining who is allowed to see that post. But that's all it is - it's just permission. No-one (who it has been shared with) will see it unless they (a) looked at the posts page on your profile, (b) have you in a circle and therefore see it in their stream, or (c) your post is subsequently shared by someone in their circle (which can happen if you don't disable resharing on the post).

Sorry - that's very wordy, and I'm tired - not sure how much sense that makes!

Five Ways to Ensure Your Geeks are Happy and Productive
If you’ve ever felt a sinking feeling as appraisal time comes around again for your team of geeks, you also know that managing the technically-inclined can be a tricky thing involving much negotiation and caffeine. +Louise Kidney examines several ways to ensure that the productivity flows as fast as the caffeine does.
If your job description combines the words “technical” and “manager,” then some or all of the following will be familiar to you: silence when you walk into your office as the conversation stalls; blu...

Interesting. If I click on Stream on the left, I get posts from people in my circle and stuff I want to read. If I click on Incoming all the circles of Dantes Hell open and I get multiple reshares of the same thing and something called Entertainment spamming me to high heaven. Odd.

Jonathan, you can get a list by going to Incoming, looking at "Sharing with you" on the right hand side and clicking Show All.

"I don't like the way you're using this new social network"
You know what? I'm creating a 'whining irritating person who I must spam with irrelevance' circle, just for you. Not all social networks are for work. Or for serious. Or for constantly broadcasting how sodding wonderful you are.

Not tried any fancy circle stuff, mine is really basic but I will broadcast, RT, link, say what I like and it's up to other people to filter it out. That's what I do with twitter - it's up to me what I read. I am blocked/unfollowed and I block/unfollow.
