Birdpath 9

The wings of a bird in flight leave no tracks on the air.

These moving images are birdpaths from Ashes and Snow.

Fly the birdpath.

Shot as the sun was setting using a strobe flash to light up the foreground. Where the light from the flash ends, the sunset fills in. Location: North Shore, Oahu (Hawaii)

Ontario-based photographer Stephen Orlando turns the repetitive motions of kayakers, canoers, and swimmers into stunning displays of light painting, with woven strands of color representing the individual strokes of movement across time and space. To create these beautiful images, Orlando’s photos use programmable LED sticks that can blink or change colors over time, which is how he was able to ensure that each paddle stroke was captured. In an exposure of 20 or 30 seconds, the kayak becomes invisible, but the trail of light left behind as they paddle gets picked up and turned into an elegant lightshow.

"I'm fascinated with capturing motion through time and space into a single photograph," the photographer writes on his website, http://www.motionexposure.com/ : "Using LED lights with custom color patterns and long exposure photography, I'm able to tell the story of movement. This technique reveals beautiful light trails created by paths of familiar objects."
