Brett Lawrie has been in a batting slump since the season started, but showed signs of snapping out of it on Sunday. The Blue Jays' third baseman plays eye-popping defence, but the question remains: Can he become a consistent big-league hitter?

The stars finally aligned for the Blue Jays in Baltimore: 11 runs, 17 hits, dazzling defence and another nifty mound performance by Mark Buehrle. And for Edwin Encarnacion, the day brought "big time" relief.

The docile Blue Jays offence doomed them to an extra-innings loss in Baltimore. Increasingly, the focus is on Edwin Encarnacion, who has no homers and no RBIs, and is providing no protection for Jose Bautista.

After the worst season of his career, Maicer Izturis is off to a good start for the Blue Jays. But when work is done, he continues to worry about his relatives' safety back home in Venezuela.

Fun at the ballpark: Brandon Morrow pitched six innings, and five of them were splendid, in a 7-3 Blue Jays win over Houston. Brett Lawrie homered, Dioner Navarro stole a base and John Gibbons didn't challenge a bad call because his team lacked access to the proper TV feed.

Dustin McGowan's past two wins came six years apart. Jose Bautista was on hand for both of them, once as an opponent, once as a teammate.

R.A. Dickey had a good knuckleball. He expected to pitch a complete game. He was wrong, big-time. And the Blue Jays offence continued to sputter in a 6-4 loss to the Houston Astros.

The Toronto Blue Jays have juggled their rotation order, providing two pitchers with extra rest. This Jays notebook also contains updates on Jose Reyes, Casey Janssen and J.A. Happ.
