First test cast, 90% success! All the parts came out pretty well, aside from a few small air bubbles and a couple defects in the parts. Overall a success, and the flaws could be attributed to my misunderstanding of how much pressure to apply to the pot. I had it at 40-45, when apparently Smooth-On recommends 60 psi. I think there's a slight flow problem at the base of the pelvis (photo 4, the semi transparent area) that can be corrected by expanding the channel connection point.
➡️ Check out my blog for some history on the process: http://arloft.tumblr.com

Tomorrow I'll do another cast under increased pressure to see if the results improve, then modify that channel if needed. Another alternative approach would be to add a vent parallel to the injection point and do a pour instead of injecting, see how the results change. Either way, this mold has been a good success!

Just like before, I wrote up a list of steps and tools needed to "rehearse" making a casting, as it's been a while since my last one. It's good to take precautions, make sure everything's in order. Measure twice, cut once and all that. This post isn't too exciting but it's better than a post showing a huge mess because I hurried.

Took some advice from another resin caster and split this mold into three parts, columns based on the previous posts. Also removed the channeling seen in my last post. It wasn't wanting to attach to the parts without adding large amounts of glee which would've been bad for a few reasons.

Set the parts in clay then built up channeling between them and finally added channeling around the edge. Still need to add a free vertical vents for air to escape when the reason is poured. Feeling better about this mold now. Had some concerns a few days ago but the improvements feel right. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Not much to look at yet, just some initial rough sketches for a new project for the MOTUC line. Trying to figure out the best position for the figure, but I only have a few to use for actual, physical testing. I'm pretty excited for this project, been thinking about it for a while now.

Thanks for adding me to the group! Here's a little bit of my recent work. I'm trying to perfect replication before moving on to doing my own original toys and parts. I'm mainly targeting vintage Masters of the Universe at the moment, and plan to branch out into 3 3/4" Star Wars and GI Joe customs, then back around to MOTU Classics scale.

Holy crap guys!! Pulled a near-perfect cast from my latest mold! 😆
Had some struggles cutting open the mold (haven't done many one piece molds) but think I'll get better at it as I do more.
Did the usual syringe injection, and added drink stir straws into the two vents, seemed to help let the resin flow higher than than the top of the mold, further reducing trapped air. I tried to pull it out a bit too early (overexcited), and distorted the neck/collar on the front half of the cast but it shouldn't happen again. Turned out slightly translucent, probably need to use an opaque resin. I'll try for very transparent next time.
Oh man, this was such a breakthrough, I just can't even. 😆

Custom Figures  -

Mixed up the requisite resin parts A + B (#SmoothCast 327). Need to work on estimating the volume needed, almost every time I've overestimated and had a few ounces leftover. Though there weren't any spills or messes to cleanup in a frantic hurry. 327's longer pot life is relaxing, I don't have to rush. Put the mold into the pot and pressurized it up to 40~ psi, and the tank's holding pressure pretty well (still need to monitor it and add pressure if it drops too low). 327's got a maximum 20 min pot life so I'll give it 25 to be sure, then set it aside for 4 hours to finish the full cure.

Pulled apart the mold halves today (had to cut a bit around the edges with an x-acto). Trimmed out any blockages in the flow channels. Need to wash it with soap & water before it's ready for resin casting. Details were captured pretty well, looks like one of the pegs at on a pelvis half could be too stumpy, will see how it turns out in a casting. Hope to get a test shot or two done today and do a test assembly. Exciting! http://arloft.tumblr.com

This clip shows the rough build of Krampus' run animation I made in Spriter, and the second half of the clip is a quick and dirty export to GIF. Wanted to see how the animation looked at full speed. Looks good, needs a bit of tweaking to the speed, then add the arms, and give the head a bit of wobble so it looks more alive.

Started using Spriter (http://brashmonkey.com) to build smooth animations for my Krampus game project. It's pretty awesome overall, even though the UI has some touchy viewport zoom issues on the Mac, I still recommend it. There's a great free version available and it works on Mac, Windows, and even Linux! Nice.

Spent way too much time the last few looking at and trying different 2D animation apps for Windows. Not nearly enough time has been spent actually drawing the animation frames. It's looking more and more that I'll break down and pay for Adobe Creative Cloud, against my better judgement. All the free apps I tried, Pencil, Synfig, PAP, etc, all failed in some degree on the Surface Pro 3, my preferred digital drawing tool. No UI scaling is the major issue on all these apps, instability is second.
