The benefit of Small Groups

"The potential benefits of small group learning and training outweigh the possible challenges. Well educated group facilitators, e.g. registered psychologists, counter the possible shortcomings of small group training."

1. Group training can be customized to the needs of the group

The flexible and reflective nature of small group training means that the facilitator can adapt their approach to training and coaching to accommodate the individual needs of the participants in the workshop. Differentiation and accommodation means that the facilitator can vary their approach to teaching and facilitating learning, to hone in on the specific knowledge and skills the individual may need to progress. When done effectively, this personalised approach to teaching and training may allow individuals to not only gain higher subject knowledge, but also acquire higher intellectual, critical thinking and analysis skills. Small group training is often more flexible in terms of where the training takes place, how the seating arrangements are organized, gauging the appropriateness of activities and making changes on the spot, etc.

2. Individual attention

Within the smaller group, every member is invited and encouraged to participate, and individual attention is given. With larger groups, facilitators are not able to attend to all the individual participants.

3. Faster pace and better focus

Greater focus is experienced, as the small group environment encourages focus and attention. Fewer interruptions result in training material being explored at an accelerated pace, while allowing for deeper discussion of the areas that need illumination.

4. Peer engagement and camaraderie

Perspectives from psychology and education (Vygotsky, 1962; 1978) show learning to be an interactive, collaborative, social process, where the facilitator or lecturer facilitates the transition of the learner into ‘zones of proximal development’ to encourage the co-construction of new knowledge (Matthews, 2011; Mills & Alexander, 2013). The role of the lecturer/facilitator/educator is to facilitate rather than dictate the nature of what is being learned. This means that the people attending the workshops, the learners, have an active part in the process. The facilitator provides the ‘scaffolding’ around which the individuals can construct their own learning, which they build on their prior knowledge (Mills & Alexander, 2013). Variety and fun are generally brought about by semi-structured group involvement, preventing the possible hitting of a plateau and counteracting withdrawal and/or boredom. According to the feedback received from our participants, they highly valued the interactive nature and peer engagement within our workshops – confirming psychology and education research outcomes.

5. More affordable and economical

Small groups provide personal attention and a greater opportunity to succeed compared to larger groups. As such, people may find that small group training not only fits their budget better than individual or large sessions, but also provides them with the attention they need to maximize their learning. In general, our participants want to move forward and become more successful, but they need to consider finances. Large groups create the need for larger convention centres, therefore smaller groups result in less extra cost.

The potential benefits of small group learning and training outweigh the possible challenges. Well educated group facilitators, e.g. registered psychologists, counter the possible shortcomings of small group training. Effective facilitation of group dynamics, the creation of a safe environment for sharing, and optimizing positive learning outcomes by building trust and respect, are all part of the approach followed by Psychology Worx. Psychology Worx facilitates emotional wellness and corporate training workshops for any interested individuals, or for small, midsized and larger organizations and companies.
