New Google Currents release has Listen-y features

Anyone else notice the new audio support in Google Currents? It's sort of back-handed podcast support, but not really.

Suspicious new goodreads app permissions

Why does the goodreads app need to access my contact list or worse, my call log?

Remember when "Google" was synonymous with "high-performance web services?" I do. I remember when I switched from Altavista to Google search and I really felt Google was more responsive.

Lately, I've been finding Google's services sluggish. Search results seem to be slowing down noticeably. They still claim ~0.25 seconds to get my results, but the page feels like it's taking longer to load. YouTube lags constantly.

Is Google's focus on apps and cloud services sacrificing their reputation for performance excellence?

"My first big break came when an ex-councilman from the village of Carmelita, named Anthony Rhaburn, was caught on one of my devices while trying to convince one of my employees to help the government kill me."

That is totally how governments do this shit.  They get ex-councilmen to convince your employees to kill you.  DIABOLICAL!

Hey, cyclist friends, is this something you would want to try? Looks snazzy to me.

I just looked again. I'm pretty sure there is no back brake. Just a front disk. And because you are already leaning forward with the equivalent of the bottom bracket being so far back, if you grab the brake, especially going down a hill, you are going over the bars like cheap beer on ladies night.

The power button on my Galaxy Nexus failed, and I kinda crapped my pants because I have lots of priceless footage and photos on it of my little dude. This post saved me.

I learned two things from this. First, backing up photos from my phone has got to be a regular habit, perhaps more critical than backing up stuff from my laptop. Second, I will never, never, ever buy a device that only has integrated storage again. This is going to be hard to do, I realize, since that seems to be the industry trend these days, but this design flaw is way too blatant to get fooled again.

My Galaxy Nexus received an Android update yesterday, and I am convinced the hideous new clock style has intentionally been designed to get you to want to change your lock screen so badly that you figure out the new modifiable lock screen UI.

Nope.  It is not consistent based on time of day.  Which would make sense, seeing as though it is a clock...

Google retiring Google Reader marks another step away from standards and open subscription media by the tech giant that looks less and less like the company many fell in love with only a few years ago. Google has no viable solution to support podcasts or other independent media syndication on any of its platforms after this. No, posting on a "social network" doesn't cut it.

So Sticher, as of yesterday, now allows automatic downloading of podcasts while on WiFi for offline listening.  Still free.  It's still not ideal, but it is probably the best free solution out there right now.

Just had a realization that I can flip through high-quality photos from another planet as easily as I might flip through family photos or the latest celebrity gossip. I think we've all been doing that for a while, now, but the significance of this -- the gargantuan implications of this -- just struck me full in the face. And now I have a headache.

Dear Jason;

There are no other planets, its just a massive funding conspiracy from nasa and photo shop. Also its fun to pretend this isn't a matrix we're living in and we have freedoms such as movement and choice. Good one.

Got Jelly Bean on my phone over the weekend. Once again, keyboard is all messed up. Punctuation is a nightmare. Why do they revamp the thing every time?

Other than that, how else has been your Jelly Bean experience?
Also, on what phone?

Staff seemed annoyed to have guests, greeted with scowls everywhere. Facilities felt like a bleached soviet orphanage. "Villas" are equivalent of (actually are?) work camp portables. "Internet access" censored, popular media, news sites and more inaccessible. Powerful sense of nothing to do overwhelmed our group's staunchest optimists. Sit in a pool of dirty water they call a "mineral spa," or sit in the smokey, forsaken saloon across the street. Really miserable place.
