Electron microscope video of phonograph needle in an LP groove. About 1/400 actual speed. Captured via Tektronix MDO3000 oscilloscope.

This video was made via the "stop motion" animation technique.  I moved the LP by 50 microns at a time, and captured a frame after each move. The setup inside the microscope was made possible by the fact that there are two separate stages with their own motion controls. I fixed the needle to one stage and the LP to the other so that I could get both parts into the frame at a good angle.

This is epic. I don't know how it got published in usenix, but I am not complaining.

Of course, pride precedes the fall, and at some point, you realize that to implement aggressive out-of-order execution, you need to fit more transistors into the same die size, but then a material science guy pops out of a birthday cake and says YEAH WE CAN DO THAT

Spotted this shadow & sign combination on the way to work today. Kinda timely given recent events.

Claude Frisse-Greene took one of the first colored motion pictures using a color processed his father, William Frisse-Greene invented.  In the video below, the British Film Institute used computer enhancement to restore the  original footage.

The combination of the music and the tint-color gives a very moving and nostalgic view of 1927 London.

Worried you might eat too many easter eggs this year ?
Never fret, The Baron is always here to lend a helping hand: come down to Acklam Village Market (http://www.acklamvillagemarket.com/contact/) just off Portobello Road this Easter Sunday afternoon for a special daytime gig, and we'll help you burn those Cadbury's creme calories off with an afternoon of SuperFunk guaranteed to get you grooving.

Free entry, and there'll be food & beer too (in case you hadn't eaten enough easter eggs.)

Lots of other music on the day too - full line up here: http://www.hotvox.co.uk/events/hot-vox-87
