I covered my first mass shooting when I was in my earlier twenties. It was on July 18, 1984. Twenty-one people died after a man carrying three guns (just like the suspect in Colorado) walked into a McDonald's in San Ysidro, CA, just south of San Diego, and fired his weapons for 77 minutes before he was stopped. I was in San Francisco at the Democratic National Convention when I got the call from my editor at the Philadelphia Daily News to head south and find people who lost loved ones in what was then the worst mass killing in U.S. history. Working on the mass shooting story in Aurora, Colorado these past few days has brought back lots of grim memories. After all these years as a journalist, it doesn't get easier reporting these stories. It is harder.
