Why didn't city and state health commissioners  evacuate the nursing and adult homes in the "mandatory evacuation zone" before Sandy.? They did so during Irene. Sheri Fink, Michael Powell and I took a look at what were some of the factors that went into the decision.

I covered my first mass shooting when I was in my earlier twenties. It was on July 18, 1984.  Twenty-one people died after a man carrying three guns (just like the suspect in Colorado) walked into a McDonald's in San Ysidro, CA, just south of San Diego, and fired his weapons for 77 minutes before he was stopped. I was in San Francisco at the Democratic National Convention when I got the call from my editor at the Philadelphia Daily News to head south and find people who lost loved ones in what was then the worst mass killing in U.S. history. Working on the mass shooting story in Aurora, Colorado these past few days has brought back lots of grim memories. After all these years as a journalist, it doesn't get easier reporting these stories. It is harder.
WARNING: Graphic. James Oliver Huberty kills 21 people in a San Ysidro McDonald's Restaurant on July 18, 1984. Documentary with News Footage. McDonalds Massacre, McDonald's Massacre, McMurder, McMassa...

Sorry I missed the NYT's first Google+ hangout. I was in Brooklyn reporting a story about the use of social media by the Occupy movement. Looks like the "hangout" was a huge success. You can see the conversation with Sam Grobart and Jenna Wortham, though here.
All the news that's fit to +.
