Phillemon Hlungwani’s trees are rooted in the earth and crown the dancing sky. Energy and conversation emanate from them. The confident mark-making in his trees parallels his love of the Giyani landscape.

Lionel Smit’s muse is most often the Cape Malay woman. His work centres on identity. The sculptural process – evident in Smit’s unique moulding technique – becomes as significant as the subject; the procedure itself challenging the way we create an understanding of identity through art. Rather than simply representing a model’s identifiable characteristics verbatim, Lionel Smit blurs the fabric of realism through abstraction: the dense and robust surface is like a landscape, plied and wrought, yet fragile and fallible, becoming then like flesh itself.

Carl Roberts explains, “it is not any stone, bone, piece of coral or wood that l use. I look for shape, texture, colour. Usually my preference is for something that is organic and a bit messed up.”
As “Perfect order is as hostile to innovation as total disorder” (“Arrival of the Fittest” – Andreas Wagner).
Disorder like the Rorschach test (ink blot test) can help to fire the imagination and explore what lies in the subconscious.

Marieke Kruger’s recent body of work explores drawing that functions as a valuable vehicle which facilitates reciprocity between the drafter and her life-world. She proposes that this relationship of exchange can bring about transformation of the self. #mariekekruger #charcoaldrawing #largescaldrawing #knysnafineart #spiritualityinart

Gary Stephens captures the essence of the contemporary African hub in which he lives and works in Johannesburg. His large scale portraits, pleated and folded and strung, enhance the optical vibration and movement.
