The publishing industry's packaging of women's literary fiction in stereotypically girly covers makes great books seem trashy.

Interesting feedback (captured through Twitter!) on what innovators want. The take-away: "Give me the freedom to work myself out of job, but then still have one." #msloc430

This post lists some of the pitfalls of a community that lacks structure/management. Interesting read in light of the #msloc43readings on communities and social networks

I can relate to both the Ghost Town and Pile of Tools--my two not favorite communities to "friend". I will admit that I have been afraid to step up and lead a community because I'm afraid it will fall flat and be "the Ghost Town" or just another thing for people to search for on the internet. I think it is an issue of credibility for me when acting as the "newcomer" in a community or even starting one. It can be very intimidating for someone like me who reacts to her environment quickly. However, I can see that there is a need for someone to manage a group. Usually in the event of chaos and disorder, I will make an attempt to step in if I get impatient enough within a community--"Chop, chop!" is usually what I say.

Pile of Tools reminds me of some training groups I've participated in. Everyone has an assessment or tool they like to use and we end up with a pile of them, not knowing what to do next.

Interesting perspective as a counterpoint to Leonard/Swap's "experience repertoires," from #msloc430 , suggesting that true innovation is less likely to emerge from experts. He seems to indicate that, due to their broad experience repertoires, they find parallels to previous experiences and tend to make tweaks and adjustments on those approaches. In contrast, non-experts have fewer past experiences to draw upon and, thus, are more likely to come up with a new and innovative solution.

Interesting stuff. David Snowden - via his Cynefin framework - seems to suggest that the domain of experts is more in "complicated" problems vs "complex" ones. Complicated suggests there are one or two good answers and you need someone with expertise to analyze properly.

More reason to question the either/or dynamic of the objectivist theory, as learned in #msloc430. As the author suggests, facts can't be viewed as mere bricks that exist outside of their context, independent of culture, and without connection to other facts. #msloc430
