Several things go wrong with mouth-breathing. When a child mouth breathes while they are sleeping, the lower jaw has a tendency to fall back and constrict the airway. This causes less oxygen to be delivered to the brain, the muscles and all the cells of the body, therefore the body functions less than optimally. When a child is not able to breath well while sleeping it can affect the brain and body's growth and development. #HealthyStart means #HealthyKids

May is 2018 National ASTHMA & ALLERGY Awareness Month. Mouth breathing is one of the most common oral habits associated with Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders. Unfortunately the risk of certain conditions increase. These include (but are not limited to) chronic allergies, hay fever, chronic or recurring sinus infections, asthma and chronic stress and anxiety. Breathing through your nose, as nature intended, provides your body with the oxygen it needs to survive. Mouth breathing in children can cause crooked teeth, facial deformities and poor growth and development. One of the most important keys in understanding how to identify sleep troubles in children is to have a good idea on how much sleep they should be getting for their age. A few signs related to sleep disorders in children are excessive daytime sleepiness (feeling overtired), trouble sleeping, snoring, mouth breathing, nightmares, night terrors, frequent headaches and bed-wetting. Sleep Disorders can lead to many behavioral and health issues. The first step? A HealthyStart® Sleep / Airway Assessment. Don't wait. Does your child snore at night? When a child snores on a regular basis (3 times a week or more) it could be that they are struggling to breathe. One of the most common oral habits associated with Sleep-Related Breathing Disorder (SRBD) is snoring. SRBD has many outward symptoms such as ADD/ADHD, chronic allergies, anxiety, poor performance in school, frequent headaches, night terrors and more. Please take a minute to fill out an easy assessment for your child - https://www.thehealthystart.com/self-assessment or use the Doctor Locator to find a Doctor in your area and schedule an appointment for a HealthyStart® Dental / Airway evaluation. #DontWait #SnoringIsNotCute #HealthyKids are #HappyKids #HealthyStart
