I'm going to be frank here - disapproving of anti-depressants and other drugs used in the treatment of mental illnesses does nothing but harm the people for whom those treatments would work. Having to be treated in the first place is not ideal, and having friends and family disapprove of having to take pills doesn't help. Pills aren't just there to be a 'last resort', sometimes they are the most appropriate treatment and THAT IS OKAY.

Yes, not everything can be cured by prozac, but generally doctors are very good about prescriptions. They know when it is appropriate and when it isn't. The RIGHT treatment is the most important thing, and sometimes it's hard enough to be taken seriously when trying to get help, without the merry-go-round of 'change your diet and exercise more, it worked for me!!!' from friends, family, and sceptical doctors.

And while you're at it, take a look at this piece on the shitty welfare reform the tories are pushing through.

The wordpress plugin I put together to provide Torhead and R2-DB tooltips is now on the Wordpress codex. If you install it from there then you'll get future updates as I release them. It also makes it dead easy to install from inside Wordpress itself.

Disqus data shows pseudonymous comments are best

Via the AP's +Jonathan Stray, who noted on Twitter that "Disqus shows that psuedonymous comments are "higher quality," as measured by likes and replies. Major data point."

I agree. Thanks to +Mariam Cook for highlighting the data on her blog.

And I imagine it's one that will be raised to +Vic Gundotra, although last I heard (at Web 2.0 Summit) pseudonyms were supposed to be coming to Google+ soon.

I agree that pseudonyms are a great way to go, in some cases; however the data provided by Disqus really doesn't prove a lot. Determining the "quality" by the number of times something was "liked" or "replied to" does not necessarily determine it's quality, but rather it's effectiveness in riling up a topic.

I know several folks who use pseudonyms and end up becoming a completely different person. The whole "G.I.F.T." (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/3/19/ sorta NSFW) concept works just as well with pseudonyms as it does anonymous commenters.

On another level, anonymous commenters are more likely to be voted down, or reported as spam, simply because of the "anonymous" tag, whether the comment has great quality or not. I've seen this a lot on YouTube and other sites with comments and the ability to "block" a comment by simply having enough dislikes.

I think that the case of Real Identities being so low, is the fear of accountability, as well as the fear of getting spammed or stalked, or other not so nice things happening.

The New York Times is doing an extensive series on mental illness, which I have mixed feelings about (as usual), but one thing that really stands out about the series as a whole is that it very much centres the experiences of patients, the narratives of people with mental illness. That alone makes it stand out in a world where most narratives about mental illness are about mental illness.

Here are the first four parts, the fifth is scheduled to run:
