Towards a more civil internet - Treating others with respect

Recently, I've been thinking about how anonymity and technology drives us apart, and the need for some more human connection and appreciation. I wrote a blog post about it, which I would love you to look at. If you like it, please do share, and we can start a quiet revolution.

Content Marketing - What types of content are people buying and selling online?

Please feel free to share and repost this information with anyone that would find it helpful, especially writers, bloggers and other content marketers

I recently carried out an analysis of four week’s worth of article sales on Constant Content (CC), one of the main marketplaces for high quality online content and content marketing.

Much of the content there is written ‘off spec’ - In other words it isn’t created for one specific buyer, but rather written and added to a huge online catalog of content that potential buyers can browse and buy from. All of the content on CC is reviewed and edited to make sure that it’s of a high quality and the writers there tend to know the content market quite well. It’s a very good resource for both writers and content marketers.

In total, I analyzed the titles of just over 800 articles, sold over the last four weeks and ran the results through some text analysis to identify what the most popular words in the various article titles were. I’m happy to share the results of this below.

Sentence length and syllables
Average sentence length (words) : 6.4
Average Syllables per Word : 1.75

A typical selection of article titles are:
The Role of Games and Play in Education
Avoiding Honeymoon Hotel Hassles
Eating for a Healthier Liver
A Guide To Selecting New Staff
Four Herbal Remedies to Help You Sleep
Expert Portrait Photography in Six Steps
10 Quick and Easy SEO Tips

We can see from this that the article titles are short, very clear and concise and tell the prospective buyer (and the eventual reader) exactly what to expect.

Most common words used in titles

We can see from the above that the second person pronouns ‘You’ and ‘Your’ are extremely popular. This reflects the trends towards educational and how to articles that address the reader directly. How to guides and tips are also very well represented.

Again, it’s clear that ‘how to’ guides remain by far the most popular type of article sold. There’s also an emphasis on home, health, apps, business and social media. Tips, benefits, guides/help and analysis (reasons) are also very well represented.

There are some interesting insights to be gleaned from the three word phrase analysis. Health benefits was the most popular phrase, but technology, money saving and health are also popular topics. People wanting to change how they do things are a popular audience too.

Responsible Investing - How I'm investing $30,000 in deep value stocks and sharing my approach, research and outcomes with you.

Over the long term, I believe that the best way to grow personal wealth is through responsible investing - Putting money into high-quality funds and letting them accrue value over time.

Although I know that many people prefer to just stick to retirement funds, ETFs or simple index trackers, I also think that there's value to be found in building a portfolio of decent, well-valued individual stocks. Recently, I've been using an app called 'Simply Wall Street' to find discounted, quality stocks to invest in.

I've written a series of three blog posts on the approach that I am taking, my investment philosophy and the stocks that I have chosen as a result of my research. I'm also providing public access to my portfolio so that people can track my performance.

The three blog posts are:

Me, Simply Wall St and a $30,000 experiment - https://medium.com/stock-market-101/me-simply-wall-st-and-a-30-000-experiment-2911a5ba3798 - In which I discuss:
- The importance of a healthy approach to investing (having an emergency fund disposable income, risk mgt)
- A little more about Simply Wall Street

Diamonds in the Rough — Finding Good Investments - https://medium.com/stock-market-101/diamonds-in-the-rough-finding-good-investments-fceae318bc0e - In which I discuss:
- The importance of having a good investing strategy
- The foundations of a good strategy
- My personal approach to investing (strong financial health, paying a dividend, good value, proven track record)

Finding $30,000 of value in the stock market — Picking the right stocks - https://medium.com/stock-market-101/finding-30-000-of-value-in-the-stock-market-picking-the-right-stocks-78782dc289ec - In which I discuss:
- How do you find deep value in the stock market?
- How I picked stocks to invest in
- The stocks that I picked and why I picked them
- Providing a publicly shared portfolio spreadsheet so that you can track my progress

My hope is that through sharing all of this openly that I can demonstrate that a measured, objective, research-based approach to investing can help us build wealth.

While I know that ETFs, index funds and other instruments will still be preferable to the majority of investors, I hope that those of you investing in individual companies will find something worthwhile here.

TL;DR: I'm investing $30,000 of my own money into individual, deep-value stocks that I have researched and sharing what I am doing in the hope that it's useful to other people here.

I am very happy to answer any questions and take feedback.

Any comparisons on SEO performance of pages with decent, full-width header images above the fold, vs. half-width left or right-aligned?

With the increasing reliance on mobile search and the upcoming Google mobile updates, I wondered if there had been any research / thinking on the SEO Impact of leading off an article with a good, full-width image?

Imagine two scenarios:

A full-width, high-quality, relevant image above the fold but not a great deal of text or other content. The article itself is high-quality and meets other good-practice SEO guidelines (well-written, relevant, good word count, various other media etc.)

2. A half-width image, left or right-aligned with more text above the fold but otherwise identical to scenario 1.

All things being equal, what do you think is more likely to have a positive impact on SEO, especially with the prevalence of mobile search? Any links to solid data and research would be much appreciated.
