Unfortunately they announced a spammy, outdated SEO link building campaign on Dec 23rd. Google de-indexed the site once Rap Genius's tactics were widely publicized - just 2 days later.
Google will punish spammy tactics even if the site in question is providing real value for users and has a strong online community (RG has >500k FB fans).
Key point: talk to a professional search engine marketer before scaling your next "growth hack."
