Leon Russell played here in Honokaa Hawaii last night. sold out. 4 piece band but drummer didn't get much love or LIGHT. Beau Charron on Guitar, Jackie Wessel on bass and Claude Russell Bridges...AKA Leon Russell on keyboards. We don't get real "active" "energetic" bands here, mostly older classic rockers, so there isn't much "action". I TRY to get at least some emotion. D3s manual with 70-200 ISO 1000-3200 mostly f2.8 to f 4 at around 1/250 depending on the lighting.  I can't seem to put these in the order I wanted. oh well, no more time. Got a deadline. enjoy

I had an assignment from my local weekly to shoot a Little League game here on the Big Island. I've previously only shot the little guys, but while I missed a few, I got some great shots IMHO.
Here, Catcher Kieran Lo barely tags Laden Perreira Lau out as the runner tries jumping over Lo to score at home plate, lower left.

We lost Ray Manzarek today. Founding member of the Doors and currently touring with Roy Rogers. I was fortunate enough to see him on my birthday, feb 9, this year, 3 days before his last birthday. we'll miss you Ray. His performance was top notch and no hint he was sick.

Dang I was almost finished and got dunked. Take 2: John Mayall, Godfather of Brit Blues, played his 2nd concert in Honokaa, Big Island Hawaii last night. As usual, he surrounds himself with top talent and this band is no exception. Greg Rzab on bass, Jay Davenport and "Rockin' " Rocky Athas on guitar. Of course, John plays ANY instrument and vocals. Thanks to Les at Lazarbear Productions for the access. There was no photo pit and chairs were right up against the stage, so I stood in the wings with the stand/dancing groovers and kneeled up close to the stage (yes, kneepads are wonderful). This  caused the typical mic stands and keyboards to be in the way, but hey, I got to shoot and actually pause and enjoy the entire show. Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown sat in on guitar too. I cloned out some "junk" CS3 LR3 Nikon D3s  70-200 f2.8VR ISO 3200 mostly 1/250 sec around f 3.5-5.6 but slower for drum stick blur.
Comments and advice welcome. We don't get the hot top tier new groups here, so I shoots what I sees. And, yes, I bought a ticket.

I shot my first roller derby bout Sat night and the girls were thrilled with the photos. I used 2 off camera Nikon strobes for 2 different angles mounted on a Manfrotto magic arm and a Joby Gorilla Pod with small ball head, Pocket Wizard  Mini and Flex on one and PW Plus II on other... Nikon D3s and 70-200 f2.8.  Here, Coco, in white with star on helmet, is the Jammer and is busting her way through the pack to lap the opposite team  and score a point. White is the Waimea Wrangler Roller Girls and black is the Kona Outlaw Rough Rollers, at the Kona Big Island gym. Without the strobes, the light sucks big time, under powered fluorescent s. I had both strobes on same channel so one light shows in background. This Sat I'll use 2 diff channels.

Don't think I already shared these. Ray Manzarek who is 74 freakin' years old and looks GREAT is teamed up with Roy Rogers (on the twin guitars). If you are in his age bracket, you might remember Ray as the keyboardist of the DOORS, a top 60s rock band until singer Jim Morrison's untimely death at 28 in 1971. Ray and Roy,,,,,almost as confusing as a stage full of Scotts.
This is a LazarBear production and next month John Mayall,, godfather of British Blues will return. Unfortunately, here on the Big Island of Hawaii, we don't get the big new acts, but I'm now friends with the producer of these shows so I get good access. Thanks Les. keep the acts comin'     Jock

First good day of snowboarding in 3 years on Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii last Sunday, 2-24-13. We have been in a major drought on part of the island.  It's 14,000 feet so really thin air. Keahi Camara tried boogie boarding, which he is very good at in liquid water, but on snow there are no brakes. Mostly snowboarders, 2 downhill skiers  and one cross country telemark skier along with a few crazies on anything that would slide, including a rental car that slid off the parking area and got totaled and is still stuck on the slope.  Nikon D3s 24-70 f2.8 lens.

Local 10 piece band Leche de Tigre from Kona will be touring the Bay Area and Santa Cruz during the first 2 weeks of March. Try to catch them, sorta Gypsy-Latin-Funk. VERY original.  This is about the only shot I could get showing all 10 faces at once, (try that sometime) shot from a balcony. They wanted more wide shots and behind the band shots showing the crowd rather than the single, twosie, threesie groups. I'm WAY behind with my shoots, so I'll get to editing later. I guess I shoot too many events. D3s 70-200 f2.8 @ 102mm ISO 2000 1/160 f3.5 Jock Goodman  schedule at ldtband.com
