As a pest management company, PPM strives itself on keeping Australian homes and businesses free of termites and other insect pests.

In our native bushlands, however, there are larger pests that require management as well and we can all play a part.

As shown in the story listed below, Australian feral cats have contributed to the extinction of 16 species of mammals and with the abundance of rabbits dwindling, these pests are looking to our native animals more and more as a food source.

How can we help protect our wildlife from cats?

* If your cat is de-sexed it cannot breed with feral cats and the inconvenience of unwanted kittens is also prevented.
* A cat's hunting range may be reduced by up to 75% by keeping it indoors at night.
* Fit your cat with a collar and two bells, one on either side of the name tag so that potential prey are warned of the cats approach.
* Don’t feed feral cats, whether intentionally or not. Remember to dispose of food scraps, uneaten pet food and excess fruit dropped by fruit trees and always cover your compost heap.

Have you been seeing Christmas beetles this festive season? Why do they show up right around Christmas time?

Christmas beetle larvae will spend one or two winters developing under the soil surface and will eventually emerge as adults during the warmer months. Depending on factors such as species type, temperature and rainfall, several waves of emergence can occur beginning in late November.

Just in time to be Santa’s little helpers.
