Artist Michael Marshall encourages the viewer to try to spend time with the work and just enjoying the relationships of the shapes and colors. Starting the print, he was playing off of a saying, attributed to the painter, Francis Picabia, “Heads are round so thoughts can change direction.”

He had read that somewhere, some years back, and it reminds him of when he was a kid, and the adults would say, “Don’t be such a block head.” “When you have difficulties, most of the times, it’s your thoughts stuck in a corner,” says Marshall.

Organized thematically in five sections, both the catalogue and the exhibition focus on aspects of the Latino experience in the United States: the identity of individuals striving to define themselves; the Chicano Movement’s struggle to achieve economic, political, and personal equality; tradition, memory, and culture in the everyday lives of Latinos; icons that serve as guideposts; and other voices revealing the complex and ever-changing directions Latinos choose.  #chicano   #chicanostudies   #screenprint   #serigraph   #silkscreen

"My fascination with the social human experience since the “discovery” of America and its multifarious results is an endless source of inspiration and an essential part of my discourse. This fascination has led me to such themes as the causes and consequences of migration, the mestizo and barroquism as consequences of colonization, the inversion of traditional beliefs of salvation, and the questioning of religious and social uses of the notion of paradise." -- Scherezade Garcia #screen   #print   #screeprint   #screenprinting   #serigraph   #silkscreen   #silkscreening   #latino   #latina   #latinamerica   #puertorico   #puertorican   #newyorkcity   #art   #artist

A native Texan, George Rivera works almost exclusively with language-based art. Intrigued by words, he began writing poetry while earning his B.A. in psychology from the University of Houston. Combined with a need to better understand the complexities of "race relations" in American society, Rivera established his artistic toolkit through words. #screen   #print   #screenprint   #screenprinting   #serigraph   #silkscreen   #silkcreening   #latino   #chicano   #artist   #art
