Larry Kelly’s Thought of the Day,

Everyone knows what it's like to be young. We’ve all been there and we’ve all experienced youth. But only the elderly know what it’s like to be old. So be kind to them because being old isn’t easy.

Have a great day!

Larry Kelly’s thought of the day,

There are players and then there are big game players. Many years ago when I was a college baseball player, it wasn’t important to me to have great games when we were dominating the other team. I wanted to be great when it counted the most.

Great competitors get the most joy from the most difficult circumstances. Real competitors love a tough situation. That’s when they focus better and perform at their best. The bigger the challenge the better they are. Often times great competitors don’t have the natural talent of those who are more gifted, but they get more out of what they have at moments of great pressure.

It is the difficulty of the challenge that allows us the rare opportunity to truly be our best. This holds true whether we are discussing sports, school, jobs or life in general. Enjoy the challenge – be your best.

Have a great day!

Larry Kelly’s thought of the day,
Champions seize their day. Successful people usually get up early. You will be amazed how much you can accomplish when others are just beginning their day.

You think more clearly in the morning. You can focus -- your day is uncluttered. As you accumulate the emotions and stress of others throughout your day, the quality of your work usually deteriorates.

Turn your day around. Go to bed earlier and get up earlier. You’ll be glad that you did. He who masters his time -- masters his life.

Have a great day!

Larry Kelly's thought of the day,

There is a difference between achievement and success. Achievement is the knowledge that you have worked hard and given your best effort. Success is the praise that you receive from others. It's nice and self-fulfilling. But it's not as important as achievement.

I tell my players after a game that the victory is in the effort. I tell the lawyers in my office to strive for excellence not perfection. Perfection is unattainable, excellence is always attainable.

With final exams coming soon strive for excellence. Be a higher achiever. More times than not, the success will follow. But even if it does not -- you've still achieved something valuable because you were willing to pay the price.

Have a great day!

Larry Kelly’s thought of the day,
My favorite quote comes from Teddy Roosevelt. When speaking about life he said:

The credit belongs to those people who are actually in the arena…who strive valiantly, who know the great enthusiasms; the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause. Who, at best knows the triumph and thrill of high achievement; and who, at worst, if he fails does so while daring greatly. So that their place shall NEVER be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

Spend yourself in a worthy cause…and above all else dare greatly!

Have a great day!

Larry Kelly’s thought of the day,

My dad would always tell me that life by the inch is a cinch. But life by the yard is very hard. When I’m faced with a task that appears overwhelming, I always remind myself of this little saying. Then I begin taking one small step at a time. Once I get that ball to the top of the hill and it starts on its downward plane, things become much easier. It has been said that “Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.”

Have a great day!

Larry Kelly’s thought of the day,

“A person in a position of leadership must make decisions. Making decisions is a tough job. Those under a leader can make suggestions (unless you coach with Ralph Blundo). Making suggestions is an easy job. Everybody has a suggestion. Not everybody has a decision. Perhaps that’s why there are so few leaders -- at least good leaders.”

Leadership is so important in life, business and sports. I’ve always said, “Show me your leaders and I’ll show you your team.” Simply stated -- good leaders mean good teams, business and family. I take my leadership roles very seriously. I always try to be a good leader because I know the consequences of poor leadership.

Have a great day!

Larry Kelly’s thought of the day,

I was in the hospital today visiting my uncle. As I was leaving I was approached by a member of the housekeeping staff who was probably in her 70’s. She told me that she remembered my father. When she was a little girl my dad was her family’s insurance man. In those days the insurance man would go to your house to collect the premium that was due. My dad passed away in 1993 and so there aren’t many people who remember him and so it’s always a pleasant surprise when somebody does.

Before we parted she told me that she remembers my father as being so handsome but more importantly being so kind to her. She’s a black woman and she said that she didn’t see many white men in her neighborhood at the time. She told me that her memories are more than 60 years old and she still remembers my dad like it was yesterday.

I guess the message in this story is that we never know what affect a little kindness will have on somebody. That kindness is always so powerful that it will be remembered more than 60 years later. It also serves as a reminder that the legacy we leave our family is our good name and good heart. Nothing else really matters.

Have a great day!
