The 68th Emmy Awards red carpet may have physically taken place in downtown Los Angeles, but for several hours Sunday, it felt as if the red carpet ran through the middle of a Rodeo Drive gem vault thanks to an abundance of sparkle-embellished gowns, jewel-toned dresses and rich, velvet fabrics.

Let’s get one thing out of the way at the outset: comparing the Band of Outsiders label that came down the runway here September 10 during New York Fashion Week to the one Scott Sternberg helmed until it shutter in May of last year is like saying that “The Joy of Cooking” and “Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes” are sort of same book because they both mention lamb.

Any member of the fashion industry press attending and covering Kanye West’s last-minute fashion show Wednesday — adjacent to the ruins of a smallpox hospital on the tip of Roosevelt Island — invested a minimum of five hours to do so.

With so much style worth profiling on the way into Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards, we never got around to focusing on what was being worn (or not worn) by the folks inside Madison Square Garden – particularly Rihanna, whose multiple performances as well as being honored with the Video Vanguard Award afforded plenty of screen time for a handful of fashion brands.

The arrivals at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night seemed to have something for everybody — except the dress-shirt industry.

Snakes slithering across chunky signet rings, models clad in vegan shoes see-sawing on a patch of fake grass and a runway show that includes skeleton-shaped knapsacks sounds like a scene straight out of Los Angeles’ twice-yearly fashion week. But this particular event unspooled in early August, nearly three months ahead of the city’s traditional fashion week timetable.

From Tommy Hilfiger ’s pier-a-palooza packed with carnival rides and an onsite tattoo parlor to Michael Kors’ spring 2017 collection unfurling around a Rufus Wainwright micro-concert, this round of New York Fashion Week shows has seen fashion brands go to great lengths to turn the once cookie-cutter runway show presentation into something more along the lines of a once-in-a-lifetime, buzz-worthy fashion happening. Partly a bid for eyeballs in the...

When Eric Buterbaugh, a longtime floral designer to L.A.’s stylish set, opened his Beverly Boulevard pied-à-terre in summer 2015, he told us he was determined to make the 2,700-square-foot indoor/outdoor space function as something beyond a florist’s showroom. And, to his credit, he’s delivered; the last year has seen it serve as the backdrop to a whirl of celebrity-studded parties, pop-ups, product launches and art exhibitions. But it’s hard to ...

Commemorating its 10 th anniversary this month, L.A.-based leather-centric streetwear brand Skingraft came full circle Friday night, presenting pieces from its Fall/Winter 2016 Primal collection at RVCC (Reserve Vault City Club) in downtown Los Angeles, after showing at New York Fashion Week since 2013. Other marked shifts: The label’s forthcoming expansion into home scents and wares and its movement to a direct-to-consumer-only model. The 13 me...

Given designer and 2016 CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund finalist Chris Stamp’s mantra “Made to Make It” — which glows in neon on the wall of his La Brea Boulevard boutique — it’s hard to think of a more appropriate setting than a Ciroc- and Red Bull-fueled house party in an $18.5-million Hollywood Hills mansion to celebrate his latest Puma collaboration surrounded by a cadre of professional athlete/magazine model types.

Story

Adam Tschorn makes a living wrangling words and stringing them together.
Introduction
Adam Tschorn is currently a staff writer at the Los Angeles Times where his coverage of fashion, style and popular culture most often appears online at All The Rage and in the hard copy of the Sunday Los Angeles Times Image section.

He's been covering menswear since 2004 and wearing it much, much longer than that. He holds a BA in philosophy and an MA in journalism, which has prepared him perfectly for watching fashion shows and asking: "Why?"
