18th March - Free public lecture: Food fight- your immune system versus diseased cells.
Time: 6:30pm
Venue: Stanley Quek Theatre, Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, Pearse Street.

It has been known for many decades that cancer cells have a ferocious appetite for the simple sugar glucose, which they use as one of their main fuels. Recent research now reveals that the immune cells on the front line of the anti-cancer immune response, Natural Killer (NK) cells and Cytotoxic T cells (CTL), are also very hungry for glucose. Glucose is an important fuel source that allows tumour  growth and expansion, but is equally  important to maintain the tumour killing capabilities of NK cells and CTL. Therefore, these immune cells and the diseased tumour cells are engaged in a bitter 'food fight' over glucose that may have important implications for disease outcome.  Such 'food fights’ may be an important and yet unappreciated aspect of many disease states.

This lecture will discuss the idea that nutrients are an important commodity that can affect the balance between our immune systems and various diseases, and how new therapies could be devised to shift the balance towards immune destruction of diseased cells.
