+Nova Austin, read this!

Getting good sleep is hard.  We've found that getting the lights off at night matters in a big way.  A laptop (especially my huge 17" screen) really destroys my ability to fall asleep.  I try to dim the lights after dinner, and for the last 30 minutes before bed, as dim as I can still read by (on paper).

+Nick Austin, have you seen this?  These look really fun.  I bet Jade and Elliott would like them.

Biographies of scientists -- in comic book form!

Is that geeky enough? :) G.T. Labs (gt-labs.com) has a whole bunch of them, from a biography of Richard Feynman to "Primates: The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birute Galdikas". These are great for getting comic book fans more into science (or getting science fans more into comics)!

I just finished reading the biography of Richard Feynman and really enjoyed it just because of the format. I love reading nonfiction, but I've had trouble concentrating lately. It had never occurred to me to look for nonfiction in comic book form, so this was a bit of a revelation for me!

More about a few of their books:

Feynman
"Physicist . . . Nobel winner . . . bestselling author . . . safe-cracker." http://www.gt-labs.com/feynman.html

Two-Fisted Science
"The first original graphic novel about scientists (physicists, mostly) ever, featuring stories about Richard Feynman, Galileo, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, and many more!" http://www.gt-labs.com/twofisted.html

Excerpt:

Primates: The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birute Galdikas
"The true story of three scientists who risked their lives for research that forever changed the way we think of primates...including ourselves." http://www.gt-labs.com/primates.html

Excerpts:

Dignifying Science: Stories About Women Scientists
"Stories about Marie Curie, Emmy Noether, Lise Meitner, Rosalind Franklin, Barbara McClintock, Birute Galdikas, and Hedy Lamarr. Yes, that Hedy Lamarr." http://www.gt-labs.com/dignifying.html

Excerpt:

So what other sciencey comics are out there? Or what science topics should be made into comics if they haven't already?

The kids, dog, and I spent most of our summer off on a road trip adventure.  Now that we are home, we are reviewing where we stopped, and what we loved.  We traveled through most of the Northwest and Midwest states, but realized when we colored in a map that we missed South Dakota!

This is pretty awful stuff.

What you call something in politics really matters. Yesterday in Michigan, a supporter of reproductive rights explained why she calls that state's new law "rape insurance:"

"For those you who want to act aghast that I’d use a term like 'rape insurance' to describe the proposal here in front of us, you should be even more offended that it’s an absolutely accurate description of what this proposal requires. This tells women that were raped and became pregnant that they should have bought special insurance for it. By moving forward on this initiative, Senate Republicans want to essentially require Michigan women to plan ahead and financially invest in healthcare coverage for potentially having their bodies violated and assaulted. Even worse, it would force parents to have similar and unthinkably terrible discussions about planning the same for their daughters. I've said it before and I will say it again: This is by far one of the most misogynistic proposals I've ever seen in the Michigan legislature."

I think one of the best parts of my vacation was the many forced breaks from my phone.

At the beginning of this year I got rid of my smart phone...went back to a "dumb" phone, and got a tablet mostly for the ability to read ebooks (which I love.).  I'm not going to lie - I miss the ease of accessing my contacts, texting quickly and sometime, sometimes I miss having the ability to send a quick photo.

Overall, however, I feel less distracted.  I feel less pulled to share/tell/capture every moment of my life, and better able to just be there living those moments.

What do you think of this short film titled, "I Forgot My Phone" about the crazy prevalence of smartphones in our lives?

I'm a blogger and a small business owner - I make a living because of social media, but have we gone completely over the edge?

Does anyone know of a service that links with the Picasa/ Google+ so I can easily have my photos printed? According to this:  https://support.google.com/picasa/answer/55871?hl=en&ref_topic=1689809 it should be very easy, but as far as I can find, there is no "Order prints" or "Shop" buttons anywhere.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

On a recent road trip across the country, I got tired of eating fast food. My husband and I agreed to take the kids to a sit down restaurant, and Fancy Sushi looked like a reasonable place to try out. Thinking to go for quick and easy (and hard to go wrong with), we ordered cucumber rolls, and avocado rolls for the kids. It was a great choice. The avocado was *perfectly* ripe, and the cucumbers crisp and delicious. My husband ordered a few more traditional rolls for himself, and had no complaints.

My husband and I were recently traveling across country with our kids and 4 month old puppy. We had planned to stop in Billings at another hotel, only to discover that the room was way too small to fit our family. We went across the street to see if the Kelly Inn could meet our needs. To our great relief, they could! We had plenty of space to sleep on clean, comfortable beds. The room we were given had two queens, a full size pull out couch, room for our gear (including dog crate!), and a microwave to heat up some dinner. We will definitely be back next time we drive through.

Consistently awesome, well brewed cuppa Joe. My inlaws visited this spring and the owner remembered their drink after their second visit. Very friendly and sweet to my kids too.

I grew up in Fenton, and now visit only every few years. It's become a tradition to take my children with me to Sweet Variations and let them pick out a treat. My two oldest daughters were in awe of how good the chocolates were. There's nothing quite like real, made-on-site, quality chocolate.

It was a delight to tell my two young children (both with multiple food allergies and celiac) that they could have anything they want. The look on my six year holds face was priceless.
