I can't make this stuff up

I'm sitting in a Starbucks doing random whatever over an iced americano. While I waiting for my drink, I watched a guy with his friend, pick up a newspaper; and start to remark on the Samsung Apple verdict.

Guy: "Wait, so what they're saying is, Samsung is the same as Apple?"
Friend: "I know, right? Makes me think twice about how much I paid for my Mac Book"
Guy: "Seriously"

Not 10 minutes later, a husband and wife, same newspaper:

Husband: "... Samsung's iPad is the same as Apple's iPad, and I paid how much for the Apple one? Honey, I told you they were a ripoff", after looking up the Samsung tablet on his iPhone.
Wife: "Oh wow," looking at the screen, "... that's a lot cheaper. Think we can return it?"

I put my Samsung QX410 on my table, and started to plug in, when he leans over to me, "Sorry, you don't mind if I ask, how much did you pay for your Samsung laptop?"

"Oh, no worries, it was $700." I replied.

I watched shock overcome his face, like actual shock. He looked at me, blankly, for an awkward amount of time, "Mind if I have a look?" he asked.

So, I obliged, and showed him a few things. He commented on Windows 7, so I opened up my virtual machine of OS/X... By the time the conversation was over, he was ready to kick Cupertino in the nuts, I think.

... Now, the punchline:

I'm writing this post after the FOURTH group of Starbucks patrons have made the connection that Samsung is now the same as Apple. They don't know the details, they don't really care, what they know is Apple is saying that Samsung is the same as Apple ... and with one simple Google Search, you get prices that are basically half for what seems to be the same products -- for nearly everything.

Two of these groups (including the husband/wife) asked me about my Samsung laptop, the second group noticed my Galaxy phone (also by Samsung)... Best billion dollar ad-campaign Samsung ever had.

Really enjoyable story.

'Nothing' is hardly ever really nothing. Here is an 'empty' drawing by the famous abstract expressionist Robert Rauschenberg. But there's a fascinating story behind it, and it caused a wave of shock in the New York art community, because of how it was made. And this story somehow is the drawing. Read the story here:

Just realized that I posted basically useless code last week. How embarrassing! The wrong version of my #haXeJS + #HTML5 + #jQuery + #Robotlegs example was up on Github. I've updated it to the correct version, hope it helps someone!

All you ever wanted to know about Prototyping tools:

+Michelle Rueda asked what are the best prototyping tools for Mac. So I pulled a list of the ones I have bookmarked. "Best" is subject to change. ;) In reality they all end up doing the same thing, just on varying degrees of wellness.

General:
Moqups: https://moqups.com/#!/
Adobe Fireworks
Keynote (if you want to be extra annoying to coworkers): http://keynotopia.com/ Axure: http://www.axure.com/ (I'm NOT a fan of)
Pencil: http://pencil.evolus.vn/en-US/Home.aspx MockFlow: http://www.mockflow.com/

Mobile:
Proto.io: http://proto.io/
this one: http://iphonemockup.lkmc.ch/
iPlotz: http://iplotz.com/
Balsamiq: http://www.balsamiq.com/products/mockups
Wireframe Sketcher: http://wireframesketcher.com/mockups/iphone-stencil.html  && http://wireframesketcher.com/mockups/android-stencil.html
You can also use Xcode's Storyboards to quickly create an app: http://maniacdev.com/ios-5-sdk-tutorial-and-guide/xcode-4-storyboard/

Other:
Adobe Proto: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/adobe-proto/id517834953?mt=8

Other lists:
http://webdesignledger.com/tools/10-excellent-tools-for-creating-web-design-wireframes
Smashing Mag's list is still very relevant: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/02/05/50-free-ui-and-web-design-wireframing-kits-resources-and-source-files/

Typically I'll pick my tool depending on what I need to show when. For example, in very early stages of concept I may just show sketches. If the client or whomever needs to see something slightly more "interactive" on device, I might make a PDF out of the sketches — or quick "gray boxes" in Illustrator — then add links in Acrobat (it takes like 10 minutes to do).

This list is not comprehensive. There are tons of more tools, I'm sure. If you have more wireframing/prototyping/etc tools, or ones you find particularly useful, please add in the comments.

Developers: HTML 5 pushback?

I'm hearing from more and more developers that HTML 5 isn't gaining favor with top designers and developers. Here's more:

The new Path? The one that won a Crunchie last night for great design? It’s not done in HTML 5.

This morning I saw something new coming soon from Storify. Not done in HTML 5.

This morning I visited Foodspotting, which just shipped hot new apps on iOS, Android, and Blackberry. Not done in HTML 5.

More and more I’m hearing that designers and developers are ignoring HTML 5, especially for the high end of apps.

Why?

Well, Path’s founders told me it just isn’t possible to build a great user interface, the way they did it in HTML 5.

Storify’s founder told me it isn’t possible to build smooth drag-and-drop elements.
Foodspotting’s founder told me it isn’t possible to make things smoothly zoom and collapse or scroll in HTML 5.

Is this the beginning of pushback from San Francisco’s best app builders? I think so.
