We are gathering for the first study session at Yle about transiting from Freebase to Wikidata in tagging. Join online, help us learn or learn with us.

Pia Virtanen: Despite of technical challenges we managed to do some hands on exercises and saved already a couple of Freebase -ids into Wikidata. At least we now know some tools which we can start to use:

1) To get Wikidata-ids for Freebase-items (or any strings that already exist in Wikidata):
Linked Items -tool

2) To save Freebase-ids into Wikidata:
Quick Statements -tool
https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-todo/quick_statements.php

With those two tools we can
1) find Wikidata-ids needed in the step 2 for those concepts / items we have used from Freebase and which already exist in Wikidata but do not have the equivalent Freebase-id, and after that,
2) save equivalent Freebase-ids to those Wikidata items

After this operation we have a better overview how many of “our” Freebase concepts / items are totally missing in Wikidata. When we see the amount of them and how important they are for us (how often used to describe our content on the web, type of concept etc.) we can find out what is the best way to transfer them into Wikidata.

Tom Morris: Sorry I missed this. When I saw the 11 am start time, I assumed it was 11 am GMT-5 since that's when a lot of my intercontinental hangouts start.

Is there a list of the 8,000 unmapped identifiers somewhere? The Freebase-Wikidata mapping (https://developers.google.com/freebase/data#freebase-wikidata-mappings) dates from October, 2013, so the first thing I'd do is re-run the automated mapping process on more current data.

Also, an automated mapping processing could generated candidate mappings which can be vetted by a human even if they aren't high enough probability to import into Wikidata directly without review.

Wikimedia Suomi: Yes, we were browsing the list today. Pia Virtanen from the Yle team can give access to it.

Also, it would be interesting to chart alternative workflows. I reminded myself of Wikidata Reconcile for OpenRefine. How do you think that method fits or works? It's only 7500 items we are dealing with. :)
