It's tough when the best meteor shower and a 2% waxing moon just happen to fall in the peak of wildfire season - the mountain was enshrouded in smoke last night from our vantage point so the star shoot was a bust.

Instead you get a shot of me walking through smoke from the archives for Happy International Lefthanders Day! Yes I am a fellow southpaw as us artistic types may tend to be.

#InternationalCatDay A few years ago when photographing in Zambia's Luangwa National Park, we came upon a lioness with a wire snare embedded in her neck. Luckily we were able to call the local lion research team who responded quickly because they happened to be in a nearby part of the park. We waited with the lion until they arrived. They then darted the snared female and we helped with the processing of data and removal of snare. Things got a little tense as the lioness’ temperature spiked. We took all the ice from our cooler box and pushed it against her back to keep her temperature from getting critical–I shot this moment from above. The best thing is that she survived!

While on my recent Hawaiian adventure I managed to book a tour boat to get shots of the lava flows as they entered the sea. You may recall a recent story in the news of one of these boats getting hit by a lava bomb injuring the passengers on board. Indeed this was the very same tour company I was with just one day earlier.

At the time we were more concerned with exposure to the toxic "vog" despite seeing the lava bombs being hurled through the air. The bombs were well away from our boat at the time and tours are now being kept much further off shore away from the danger.

So what's the secret to getting the lava glowing as it enters the sea? Be on the water at 3 am!
