DevTools: A Better Dock-To-Right Experience Using Vertical Splitting

If you like working in dock-to-right mode within the Chrome DevTools, you’re probably used to seeing something a little like this http://cl.ly/image/102m220m2Y1b. Basically, you still have to deal with panels such as Elements needing room for multiple columns, even though the amount of space available to work in has been greatly reduced.

Firebug does a good job of providing single-column options when less space is available http://cl.ly/image/3r1h1E3h2r2N, but the good news is you can get this experience in Chrome DevTools today, thanks to some new custom DevTools themes.

Option 1: https://github.com/mauricelam/DockToRight
Option 2: https://github.com/melat0nin/chrome-devtools-vertical.

Here’s what the final product should look like: http://cl.ly/image/3q3i0o3W1e1b
or http://cl.ly/image/3t3p3f0c0y0Z

You can either install one of the themes above, or patch your existing theme by adding the following CSS to the Custom.css file (<profile>/User Stylesheets/Custom.css):

#-webkit-web-inspector .source-code {
left: auto;
right: auto;
width: 100% !important;
height: 50%;
}

#-webkit-web-inspector .split-view-sidebar-right {
left: auto;
right: auto;
width: 100% !important;
height: 50%;
}

#-webkit-web-inspector .split-view-contents {
position: static !important;
}

We’re currently investigating this type of UI change for the DevTools and if you would like to see this make its way in, please star http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=168655, which +Tim Statler kindly put together.
