Virgin Velocity Gold Status Fast-Track

Virgin Australia has been offering a unique fast-track to Gold Velocity status through their partnership with Flybuys.

Although Virgin Australia does not generally accept status matches, many of our members have received a targeted “Explore Gold” offer. Recipients of this offer are invited to enjoy three months of complimentary Velocity Gold status. If members then earn at least 80 Velocity status credits and take at least one Virgin Australia flight within this three-month period, the complimentary Gold status is extended for ...more

Qantas Pricing Glitch

Qantas has been accused of misleading customers by advertising and selling flights in a higher class of travel than they really are.

There is a well-known issue with the Qantas website where flights will be filed in a premium class of travel, even though some segments of the journey are in a lower cabin class. For example, an itinerary from Brisbane to London via Dubai might appear as a Premium Economy class fare – even though the long sector from Brisbane to Dubai is actually in Economy. A small “i” symbol next to the fare price alerts customers to this.

But recently our members have discovered examples of Qantas advertising entire itineraries in the incorrect cabin class on their website. In one ...more

USA and Costa Rica in Style

Our member v1nce007 is criss-crossing North America as they take an adventure-packed holiday that’s also full of premium cabin flying. As well as visits to several US cities, our member joined a nine-day tour of Costa Rica! The trip began with a very nice Qantas flight across the Pacific.

"Had a really nice flight from SYD to LAX. A few J passengers were upset by the last minute equipment change to a 747 with its 2-3-2 layout. All the seat allocations were lost at about T24 and replacements were unable to be selected online. The meal service was really good and not too rushed or slow. The FA looking after me was very attentive without being over the top. Proactive on wine top ups too."

Our member will be returning to Australia in ...more

Avianca Devalues Popular LifeMiles Program

The frequent flyer program of Star Alliance member and Colombian flag carrier Avianca has long been popular with Australian frequent flyers. Avianca’s Life Miles program sells miles, often accompanied by generous bonuses (such as the current 140% bonus miles being offered). These miles can then be redeemed for premium cabin travel on other Star Alliance airlines, such as Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways.

Avianca last week increased the number of miles needed when redeeming a flight on most routes departing from Australia. For example, a return Business class ticket from Australia to Europe increased in price from 170,000 to 185,000 miles. Similarly, a round-trip from Australia to “South Asia” increased in price by 20,000 miles for Business class and 30,000 miles for First class – both 25% increases. There were also some minor ...more

The Credit Card Party is Over

All of the major banks have recently announced cuts to the number of points earned for credit card spending. But there could be even more pain on the way for credit card holders.

Business owners and employees could soon be taxed when redeeming frequent flyer points that were earned via business expenditure. Currently, business owners can earn points on their credit card spend and redeem these points as they wish. But it has been reported that the Australian Tax Office (ATO) is considering whether such rewards should be subject to the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT).

While no decision has been made, any changes could mean that Australians start having to pay tax when redeeming ...more

Optimal Strategy for 14 Annual Europe Trips

One member faces the unenvious prospect of taking up to 14 trips between Brisbane and Dublin over the next year. As this member will be paying for the flights themselves, they are looking for strategies to optimise their travel experience and hopefully score a few upgrades along the way.

"I’m looking at doing either 13 or 14 return trips from BNE to LHR (actually to Dublin but if options work best to LHR happy with that and can get separate flight to Dublin) in the next 12 months. These trips are self funded so looking at best strategy to get status asap and best mileage scheme to upgrade as many..." ...more

End of an Era for Alitalia

The future of Italian flag carrier Alitalia is in doubt after the debt-ridden airline filed for bankruptcy. The announcement came as the airline, which is losing more than a million dollars per day, failed to reach an agreement with its employees that would have seen jobs and salaries cut to more sustainable levels.

Alitalia flights will continue to operate as scheduled, at least in the short term. The Italian government has stepped in, offering Alitalia a loan that would keep Alitalia in business for up to six months. After this time, the airline will be liquidated unless ...more
