Hungry Ghost Festival (中元节)

The lunar 7th month is regarded as the Ghost Month (鬼月), in which ghosts and spirits, including those of deceased ancestors, come out from the lower realm, to visit the living. Both Taoists and Buddhists perform rituals to transmute and absolve the sufferings of the deceased.

Many people have the misconception that because it is the 7th month, the hungry ghosts are out to haunt the humans. It is not exactly true.

Many of these myths are associated with negativity and creates fear in the mind.

The truth is: Not everyone will be reborn in hell in the afterlife, which is seen as a mirror image of our present world. However, only those who have created very negative karma are reborn in hell. There are 5 other possible realms of existence - realm of hungry ghosts, animals, humans, demi-gods and gods. Hell is also not an "interchange terminal" between every two consecutive lives.

So, relax. Most of them have no ill intentions at all.

Experience the peace of mind when you visit your departed loved ones in our care.

When a loved one dies, people go through five stages of grieving, according to accepted wisdom: disbelief, yearning, anger, depression and acceptance.

Now the first large-scale study to examine the five stages suggests that they are accurate, and that if a person has not moved through the negative stages in six months, he or she may need professional help dealing with the bereavement.

The study also found that, contrary to common belief, yearning or missing a loved one is a far more dominant emotion than depression--meaning mental health experts who treat the grief-stricken may need to refocus attention on feelings of loss.

"It's important both for clinicians and the average layperson to understand that yearning and not sadness is what bereavement is really all about," said study author Holly Prigerson.

We at Nirvana Singapore will definitely be able to help you feel the calmness as you visit your loved ones in our care.

Filial Piety(孝)in Chinese Culture

Without doubt, the pillar of the Chinese family structure was the concept of filial piety. In Chinese, filial piety is expressed by the character孝(pinyin: xiào)The character xiao is made up of an upper and a lower part. The first part is derived from the character lao(老,pinyin: laǒ), which means 'old'. The second part is the character子 (pinyin: zi), which means 'son'.

Although filial piety is such a dominant ideology in the Chinese culture, it often seems absent from 'Modern' society.  It is a real shame for such an assimilating culture to not have adopted such a widespread and universal way of life.  Even crows find food for their parents when the parents are unable to care for themselves. So are we humans no better than crows?

Filial Piety can also be expressed when you give your parents a good resting place.

A real Buddhist funeral is a simple, solemn and dignified ceremony. Unfortunately, some people have included many unnecessary, extraneous items and superstitious practices into the funeral rites. They were introduced in olden days by people who probably could not understand the nature of life, nature of death, and what life would be after death.
It is most unfortunate that a bad impression has been created that Buddhism encourages people to waste their money and time on unnecessary practices. For a dignified ritual, please contact us!
Please approach the right people
If only the Buddhist public would approach proper persons who have studied the real Teachings of the Buddha and Buddhist tradition, they could receive advice on how to perform Buddhist funeral rites.
