Michigan's Upper Peninsula is an often overlooked travel destination. Sandwiched between three of the Great Lakes, the U.P. is a remote and rugged wilderness that features hundreds of miles of trail, incredibly dense forests and more solitude than anyone could ever ask for. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the options for hiking, camping and backpacking, while other visitors will enjoy the scenic beauty and laid back lifestyle.

That vast expanse of wilderness is occasionally broken up by quaint and inviting Midwestern towns populated by friendly and accommodating people. The largest of those towns is Sault Ste. Marie (pronounced Soo-Saint-Marie), which is located on the southern banks of the St. Mary's River on the eastern side of the Peninsula, just a stone's throw away from Canada.

THE MOST COMMON QUESTION I am asked here, in the capital of the Komi Republic, 26 hours northeast by train from Moscow, is, “Why Russia?”

Russians ask me this question with all the sincerity in the world. Why would an American choose to work and make a home in this country?

Russians know that Russia is the birthplace of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky; famous for winter temperatures in the double-digit negatives; home of the periodic table and the first man in space; a stage both for revolutions and premier ballet. They know that Russia is the country with the longest borders, the most time zones, the most significant production of oil, the widest swaths of virgin forest, and the world’s deepest freshwater lake.

When traveling through Colorado, one city I highly recommend visiting is the little known Ouray. Here, you'll not only get to take part in various adventure sports, sip beer at quirky breweries and eat scrap cookies at Mouse's, you'll also be able to take a scenic jeep tour through Colorado's Million Dollar Highway and Highway To Heaven.

Looking for a place in the sun? With thousands of beaches to choose from, it's hard to pick where to lay your towel. For some beachgoers, leafy palms rustling in the breeze, calm waves lapping against the shore, and remote stretches of powdery sand are all that's required for total bliss. But for others, magnificent scenery and a bustling boardwalk are the main attractions. America's Best Swimming Holes

By Alice Bruneau

Standing in the sunshine on the rocky bank, with rivulets of cool water dripping from your hair and swimsuit, you wait your turn at the base of the old oak. You’re up. You grip the fraying rope, get a running start, swing out over the pool of clear water, and release. Cannonball!

In summertime, when the mercury taunts the tip of the thermometer like an angry red fist, the best place to cool down is an old-fashioned swimming hole. These often-secluded natural pools are the perfect antidote to crowded pools with zinc-covered teenage lifeguards or water parks with $8 hot dogs. And they offer a dose of not-yet-forgotten Americana, where sunny days are measured by best friends and belly flops.

This spring, I spent eight days traveling up and down Jordan with ten other travel writers. Our itinerary had been set by the tourism board there and was packed with adventures — which meant we spent hours each day zipping around the highways of the Hashemite Kingdom on a bright blue bus.

Here are five things I learned by staring out the window:

There are many interesting cities to visit during a trip through Colorado. While Denver has excellent artisanal shops, you can find the world's highest distillery in Breckenridge. If you're looking for something out of the ordinary, the little known town of Ouray offers various ways to receive quirky hospitality.
